^ - 2 minute exclusion, handicapped 15 metres
Peterborough win 96-86 on aggregate.
A beating was expected on a track that Wolves never seem to do well at, but many still felt that the Wolves could have done much better. An injury to Magnus in the first heat did not help matters at all, but some strange decision by the management where tactical rides were concerned did the team no favours as they struggled to rescue the bonus point. The Showground may have never been Ronnie’s favourite track, but he looked poor even by his standards, while Billy, Freddie and PK tried hard but still looked a little out of touch. The reserve pairing were surprisingly our only race winners on the night, with guest Christian Henry showing some good form.
Peterborough won the toss and chose gates one and three, on a track which looked pretty rough from my position under the back straight flags.
Heat 1(re-run): Andersen, P Karlsson, Henry, Ostergaard, M Karlsson (injured, ns), 60.3. 3-3, 3-3.
Sponsor: KRW Racing.
As the riders left the tapes Magnus stopped, presumably with engine failure, but then suddenly pulled off and lay down on the centre green. It transpired that his chain had snapped and embedded itself in his leg (as we were told in full gory detail over the PA!) putting him out of the meeting, but he hopes to be back for Monday. Henry joined for the rerun, with Henry making a good gate only to be sent wide by PK on the first turn. Some good racing ensued, with Ostergaard slowing up halfway through allowing the Wolves pair in for a shared heat.
Heat 2: Henry, Hall, Hefenbrock, Armstrong, 61.7. 2-4, 5-7.
Sponsor: Terry’s Heel Bar.
Henry clearly had his gating boots on for this one as he led all the way, while Christian dug his heels in to finish third behind Hall.
Heat 3: Sullivan, Iversen, Lindgren, Correy (ret), 61.1. 5-1, 10-8.
Sponsor: Mackinder Boarding Kennels.
Wolves were certainly in the doghouse after this one, with Ronnie never looking in touch and pulling off after three laps. Freddie hounded the Peterborough pair but fell back into third at the end.
Heat 4: Jensen, Hamill, Hefenbrock, Armstrong, 61.4. 3-3, 13-11.
Sponsor: Racing Information for Profit.
Jesper was the one to profit from this one as he sped to the win from the gate.
Heat 5: Sullivan, P Karlsson, Iversen, Henry, 61.0. 4-2, 17-13.
Sponsor: The Londoners: Elsa, Beryl, Jim and Fred.
PK gated but went a bit wide and Sullivan capitalised to take over for the win.
Heat 6: Andersen, Hamill, Hefenbrock, Ostergaard (ret), 61.5. 3-3, 20-16.
Sponsor: The Muffin Oven, Whittlesey.
“D’ough!” exclaimed Ostergaard as his bike failed as he left the tapes, while Andersen looked far from half-baked once again as he passed Billy on lap one to win.
Heat 7: Jensen, Lindgren, Correy, Armstrong, 61.5. 3-3, 23-19.
Sponsor: Adrian Smith Fencing Services.
Jesper took his second win without fencing anyone, but it was yet another shared heat and Wolves were still safe for the bonus point – just!
Heat 8: Hefenbrock, Hall, Ostergaard, Henry, 62.7 3-3, 26-22.
Sponsor: Thrifty Car & Van Rental.
The Christians both made good starts and looked set to harvest more points, but a four-wide first turn saw Henry sent wide by the Panthers and emerge fourth. Christian Hefenbrock was far from thrifty en route to a good win – only Wolves’ second of the night.
Heat 9: Sullivan, Hamill, Iversen, Hefenbrock, 61.7. 4-2, 30-24.
Sponsor: Mr & Mrs M Tait.
Billy somehow got past both Panthers on the second bend, but by turn three Sullivan was back in front for the win. The race sponsors must have been impressed.
Heat 10: Andersen, Lindgren, Ostergaard, Correy, 61.7. 4-2, 34-26.
Sponsor: KJ Styling & Performance Custom Car Bodyshop.
Freddie made the gate, but Andersen looked stylish on his way to his third win, with Ronnie slowing up on the final lap – showing a distinct lack of performance.
Heat 11: Jensen, P Karlsson, Henry, Hall, 61.9. 3-3, 37-29.
Sponsor: Forcefield Body Armour.
Jesper used the trademark centre green line to take the lead on turn two, and looked bullet-proof for the rest of the way as he continued his unbeaten run.
Heat 12: Sullivan, Hall, Lindgren (tac sub, 15m), Hefenbrock, 62.8.
Sponsor: Amps Fine Wines.
Peterborough gated and negated Freddie’s tactical substitute ride –anyone who believed he could make up a 15 metre handicap around the Showground had surely drunk a few!
Heat 13 (re-run): Andersen, Hamill (double), P Karlsson, Jensen (exc 2 mins, 15m), 62.5. 3-5, 45-35.
Sponsor: Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
Some questioned Peter Adams when Billy appeared wearing the black and white helmet instead of PK, but Andersen never even saw it as he led the Wolves pair all the way. Jesper suffered bike trouble at the first two minute warning and was excluded, his 15 metre handicap ending his maximum hopes.
Heat 14: Iversen, Lindgren, Hall, Hefenbrock, 63.0. 4-2, 49-37.
Sponsor: C B Sanderson Roses.
Roses do not come in black and white, and neither did either of the Wolves in this one, again leading to puzzlement among the fans. Iversen had been one of many thorns in the Wolves’ sides all night, but here he led all the way for his first win.
Heat 15: Sullivan, Andersen, Lindgren, P Karlsson, 62.9. 5-1, 54-38.
Sponsor: GE Jennings Ltd Air Conditioning and Heating.
With the bonus gone, Wolves fans hoped for a breath of fresh air from PK and Freddie but it was not to be as Sullivan and Andersen continued to turn up the heat and complete their respective maximums.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Dry and surprisingly warm.
Track: About its usual Peterborough standard – although that’s not saying much.
Attendance: See above.
Wolves Performance: The side looked very out of touch, with poor gating and poor tactical decisions their downfall.
Entertainment: Little passing thanks to the track conditions.
Referee: No decisions to make except for two minute warnings, but he must surely have spotted Jesper’s use of the grass in heat 11.
Man of the Match: With nothing at all standing out from this performance, I have decided to award it jointly to our two reserves for some good riding early on.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 6 Looked quite slow in his later rides.
Magnus Karlsson: N/A Impossible to gauge from 10 yards – hope the injury heals quickly.
Ronnie Correy: 2 Very poor, even below his usual Showground performances.
Fredrik Lindgren: 6 Racked up some decent points in the ultimately fruitless fight for the bonus.
Billy Hamill: 7 Fairly rapid in a couple of his rides.
Christian Henry: 6 Not bad for a stand-in reserve.
Christian Hefenbrock: 7 Good early rides and some fast gating.
Next up on Monday come the men from Arena-Essex, followed by the away leg two days later. Let’s hope for an improvement from the side before then, and that plenty of support is able to travel round the M25 (hope that thought hasn’t put you off!) on Wednesday.
