Joonas Kylmakorpi 3 2 2 1 3 =10
James Brundle 1 0 0 =1
Paul Hurry 3 1 2 2 0^ =8
Wolves win 100-82 on aggregate.
The best meeting so far this year at Monmore Green saw a marked all-round improvement from the team on a night of very fast racing. Freddie and Ronnie looked like different riders to those that appeared in the previous week, while PK and Billy once again put in fantastic performances. With Ben and Christian absent due to the Under-21 World Cup, and William still injured, we turned to two Premier League guests to cover the reserve spots, and both Kevin and Matt performed very well. Even Magnus looked much better than he has so far, and this was after his injury at Peterborough.
Arena won the toss and took the inside gates for heat one, leaving Magnus stuck on the outside yet again.
Heat 1: P Karlsson, Max, Tacey, M Karlsson, 55.81. 3-3, 3-3.
All three Karlsson brothers contested the first heat, and PK took his usual win in a very quick time. Magnus was sadly stuck behind Tacey all the way.
Heat 2: Hurry, Wethers, Brundle, Little (ret), 57.99. 2-4, 5-7.
Brundle and Kevin collided leaving the tapes, knocking Kevin’s chain off and putting him out. Up front Matt and Hurry fought out a terrific race, with the ex-Wolf (sorry for reminding you all!) taking the win.
Heat 3: Lindgren, Correy, Lanham, Johnston, 55.97. 5-1, 10-8.
Some fans had their reservations here, following Freddie and Ronnie’s poor showing in the EL pairs the previous day…but they were clearly just saving their energy, as Freddie led all the way while Ronnie went from last to second in a lap! Amazing stuff!
Heat 4: Kylmakorpi, Hamill, Hurry, Wethers, 57.02. 2-4, 12-12.
Arena made the gate but Billy passed Hurry on the back straight.
Heat 5: Lindgren, Correy, Max, Tacey, 56.60. 5-1, 17-13.
Seriously, what had been said to these two? This time both Wolves gated, and Ronnie managed to hold off Mikael all the way as Freddie sped to his second win. A 5-1 over Mikael at the Green – a very rare event!
Heat 6: P Karlsson, Kylmakorpi, M Karlsson, Brundle, 56.61.
Kylmo led off but PK switched his line well to round him on the second lap for the lead. Magnus opened his account for the evening by beating Brundle.
Heat 7: Hamill, Lanham, Johnston, Little, 58.03. 3-3, 24-18.
Billy led all the way, while Kevin lost out to Johno after running wide.
Heat 8: M Karlsson, Hurry, Wethers, Tacey, 58.01. 4-2, 28-20.
Hurry appeared to knock Tacey wide allowing Matt into third, and the young Aussie enjoyed a huge battle with Hurry for the whole race, with Hurry taking him wide on the last lap to claim second. Magnus, meanwhile, had missed it all, as an apparent change of engine allowed him to take his almost customary heat 8 win.
Heat 9: Lindgren, Kylmakorpi, Correy, Brundle, 56.69. 4-2, 32-22.
From the gate, with Freddie making it three from three having not yet been headed all evening.
Heat 10: P Karlsson, M Karlsson, Lanham, Johnston, 57.52. 5-1, 37-23.
PK led Lanham for the first two laps, before Magnus surprised many by taking the Arena heat leader for second – the engine change certainly worked!
Heat 11: Hamill, Max (double), Little, Tacey, 56.93. 4-4, 41-27.
Billy fought off the black and white-helmeted Mikael around the first lap, while Tacey held what looked like a secure third. Kevin then came from nowhere to round Tacey on the very last turn and just take the place, denying Arena a heat advantage.
Heat 12: Correy, Hurry, Lanham, Wethers, 57.82. 3-3, 44-30.
The ride of the season was produced by Ronnie, who, after being shoved wide on the first lap, proceeded to go outside – yes, outside – Lanham for second, before switching back to take Hurry on the inside for the lead in seemingly one swift movement! Amazing stuff!
Heat 13: P Karlsson, Hamill, Kylmakorpi, Max, 57.41. 5-1, 49-31.
The dynamic duo sewed the match up after PK took his own brother wide on the first turn, with Billy keeping the Arena pair back as PK completed his clean sweep.
Heat 14: Johnston, Lindgren, Little, Hurry (double), 58.22. 3-3, 52-34.
A messy first turn saw Johno emerged in the lead, and we went on to deny Freddie his maximum, with Kevin keeping Hurry at the back to deny him any double points.
Heat 15: Hamill, Kylmakorpi, Lindgren, Max, 58.22. 4-2, 56-36
Billy led all the way, while Freddie just failed to catch Kylmo for second.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Warm and dry.
Track: Did not look good from the terraces, with patchy drive and a blue line appearing, but strangely stood up well and produced good racing.
Attendance: Very good crowd, no doubt increased by the good weather.
Wolves Performance: One of their finest in 2006, with all seven team members making a good effort.
Entertainment: Plenty of very lively racing and close finishes – probably the best Wolves match so far in 2006.
Referee (Jim Lawrence plus trainee Christina Turnbull): No decisions to make.
Man of the Match: For sheer effort and great racing, it has to go to Ronnie Correy.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Hardly headed all evening.
Magnus Karlsson: 7 Looked much improved.
Ronnie Correy: 9 Extra points for his incredible heat 12 ride.
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Improved on last week’s showings.
Billy Hamill: 8 As quick as ever round the Green.
Kevin Little: 7 Far from a fill-in reserve.
Matt Wethers: 6 See above.
As the song goes “The only way is up” and this performance certainly showed what Wolves are made of. We should be back to full strength for next Monday’s encounter with Eastbourne, so let’s hope for more of the same!
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
