Elite League Pairs Meeting – Swindon – 4th June
Arrival at Blunsdon for my first ever visit, is greeted by the fact that it’s £20 to get in and £3 for a programme. Terry the Tan is having a laugh but if I don’t pay his extortionate fee it’s a wasted 2 hours journey so…
Then having paid to get in we’re told that PK, Max, Barker & Loram are all out the meeting. Barker replaced by Norris… not too bad. Max replaced by Lanham…. Never mind. Loram replaced by Jansson …. Never mind. PK replaced by Correy… Ummm…. Never mind.
The Blunsdon track reminds me of spoonland which ups my spirits a little though it needs to be wider. The Terracing on the home straight is haphazard best position to be found is a position on a disabled ramp into one of the bars. The buildings on the main straight are amusing all obviously built at different times, by different designers without any consideration for what was there before. Any football fan that’s ever visited Oxfords old Manor Ground will know what I mean.
Track was dry throughout but fair play to the track staff it was watered and graded every five heats.

Ht 1. N Ped; Floppy; Freddie; Correy.
From the gate, Correy dropped like a hot potato.
Ht 2. Adams, Ulamek, Nicholls, Schlein.
Hapless =Bee’s put to the sword, never challenge the home pair.
Ht3. NKI, Jansson, Protasiewicz, Andersen.
Little did I know it at the time but this was easily the best race of the afternoon, it lifted my spirits after to rather pedestrian heats. Andersen leads for ¾ of a lap until Pepe comes roaring underneath him exiting turn 4. At the back Jansson is getting dropped. Andersen goes too wide on lap 2 trying to round Pepe but clips the fence and down he goes. NKI is wobbling everywhere and Jansson is catching him. Pepe comes a cropper on turn 2 lap 4 but remounts for a point.. no 2, Jansson is buzzing all over NKI for the last two laps and fails to get him by half a bike length on the line.
Ht4. Crump, Zagar, Stead, Hancock.
Ace’s gate, Crump off into the sunset and Stead wobbles NKI style, Zagar takes advantage of the wobbling Stead on turn 2, lap 3. Hancock looking slow at the back. Hungover after his B’day?
Ht5. Lindback, Wiltshire, B Ped, Adam.
From the gate.
Ht6. Adams, Ulamek, Freddie, Correy.
From the gate.
Ht7. N Ped, Floppy, Protasiewicz, Jansson.
From the gate.
Ht8. Andersen, Nicholls, Schlein, NKI.
NKI tried against the Bees who allowed Andersen to disappear and rode NKI out of it.
Ht9. Crump, Kylmakorpi, Lanham, Stead.
Aces gate but Stead’s wobbling on turn 2 again, he falls lap 2. Crump not trying to team ride at all.
Ht10. Hancock, Lindback, B Ped, Zagar.
Hancock all the way, Lindback challenges first couple of laps. Zagar cant get near either Pirate.
Ht11. Adams, Ulamek, Jansson, Protasiewicz.
Robins a straight and more in front of the Witches.
Ht12. Nicholls, Schlein, Correy, Lindgren.
Freddie challenges Bee’s but cant get past, over cooks it and retires.
Ht13. Andersen, NKI, Floppy, N Ped.
Panthers away and clear, Floppy catches to challenge NKI. Pedersen’s bike is spluttering and he pulls up lap 3 while in a distant last.
Ht14. Wiltshire, Kylmakorpi, Skornicki, Lanham.
Wiltshire looking fast riding right up to the fence. Adam stalks Lanham for a lap and challenges around the outside, getting him on the back straight lap 3.
Ht15. Crump, B Ped, Lindback, Stead.
Stead’s not wobbling but the Pirates team ride him out of the equation.
Ht16. Freddie, Protasiewicz, Jansson, Correy.
Pepe challenges Freddie for a lap or so.
Ht17. N Ped, Schlein, Floppy, Nicholls.
From the gate.
Ht18. Adams, Andersen, NKI, Ulamek.
Andersen makes the gate but locks exiting turn two on the outside to allow Adams underneath him. Ulamek nowhere.
Ht19. Crump, Stead, Wiltshire, Adam.
From the gate.
Ht20. Hancock, Zagar, Kylmakorpi, Lanham.
From the gate.
Ht21. Schlein, Nicholls, Protasiewicz, Jansson.
Nicholls makes turn 1 all his own and allows Schlein around the outside and tries to team ride with the young Aussie. Schlein doesn’t return the favour and disappears into the distance, Scotty caught out riding the curb as Pepe comes around the outside of him.
Ht22. Andersen, Lindgren, NKI, Correy.
Freddie and NKI ride side by side for a few laps until NKI wobbles to allow Freddie to pull away.
Ht23. Adams, N Ped, Ulamek, Floppy.
Pedersen gates but Adams reels him in for two laps and comes underneath Pedersen entering turn 2, Norris is nowhere.
Ht24. Wiltshire, Hancock, Zagar, Skornicki.
From the gate.
Ht25. Kylmakorpi, Lindback, B Ped, Lanham.
Kylmakorpi streaks away, Poole need 6 points to be sure of the final but the Finn is way to quick.
So Belle Vue & Poole top Group B on 21 points. The home side clear in group A. The centre green announcer thinks it’s Poole in the final due to their 5-4 over the Ace’s in heat 15, the video screen lists the Final as Swindon v Belle Vue. Confusion reigns! Doesn’t matter much as I don’t see Ulamek beating anyone in the final. Ian Thomas obviously has a copy of the rules and it’s the Ace’s in the final due to the fact that Crump won more races than Poole. Isn’t that a shame, the humble Dorset club won’t be picking up any silverware.
Belle Vue win the toss and choose gates 2 & 4. Stead off the outside. The genius that is Rosco plays right into Belle Vue’s hands putting Ulamek on the inside.
Final. Adams, Crump, Stead, Ulamek.
Crump clamps Ulamek on the inside allowing Stead around the outside, Adams being a true team man disappears into the distance. Crump chases him for a lap then decides to wait for Stead, who’s a country mile behind Crump but easily holding off Ulamek.
Ace’s win.. Hoorah, not the home town track specialists!
Crowd: Expected more, but I guess most people heard that PK, Loram & Max were not riding.
Weather: Can’t fault it, bright Sunshine the odd drop of rain mid meeting.
Entertainment: Most of the races were settled after the first turn, but its not often I get to go to a big fast track so I enjoyed it. They should make Adams & Crump start 15 metres back.
