BELLE VUE 61 WOLVES 35, ELITE LEAGUE B, WEDNESDAY 28TH JUNE
Aces:
Kenneth Bjerre 2* 3 1* 2* 1 =9+3
Joe Screen 3 2* 2* 2 3 =12+2
Simon Stead 3 2 1* 3 =9+1
James Wright 1 1* 2 2 =6+1
Jason Crump 3 3 3 3 =12 (max)
Phil Morris 2 1 2* 1* =6+2
Tom P. Madsen 1* 2* 3 1 =7+2
Parry’s International Wolves:
Chris Louis 1 6^ 1 0 =8
Magnus Karlsson 0 0 0 =0
Ronnie Correy R 2 F 2 =4
Freddie Lindgren 2 0 3 6^ 2 =13
Billy Hamill 1 1 3 1 R =6
William Lawson 0 0 0 0 =0
Christian Hefenbrock 3 0 1 0 0 =4
This was easily the worst performance that Wolves have delivered so far this year, with the team simply outgated and outclassed by a strong-looking Belle Vue side on a track which offered almost no passing opportunities at all. Freddie was the only man to look interested all night, producing two of the entire meeting’s three passing moves, and only his and guest Chris Louis’s six-point double ride wins saved the team from a complete massacre.
Peter Karlsson was unable to ride due to a groin injury, so Louis deputised. From the start of the meeting it was clear that the track surface was slick to the extreme, so plenty of gating would be needed for the Wolves to keep in touch.
Belle Vue won the toss and elected to take gates 2 and 4, which meant Magnus was not off the outside in heat one for the first time in a while.
Heat 1: Screen, Bjerre, Louis, Karlsson, 60.9. 5-1, 5-1.
From the gate.
Heat 2: Hefenbrock, Morris, Madsen, Lawson, 60.1. 3-3, 8-4.
From the gate, thankfully with no post-race collisions between Christian and Morris this time! Will wasn’t far behind at the back.
Heat 3: Stead, Lindgren, Wright, Correy (ret), 59.5. 4-2, 12-6.
Ronnie held second until the end of lap two, when a rear puncture put him out.
Heat 4: Crump, Madsen, Hamill, Hefenbrock, 60.4. 5-1, 17-7.
The slow time for this one was due to Crump looking round and instructing Madsen where to ride in order to beat Billy.
Heat 5: Louis (double), Stead, Wright, Karlsson, 59.5 3-6, 20-13.
With all four races having been won from gate four so far, the decision to put Louis in a black and white helmet seemed logical, and it worked.
Heat 6: Bjerre, Screen, Hamill, Lawson, 59.5. 5-1, 25-14.
From the gate.
Heat 7: Crump, Correy, Morris, Lindgren, 59.9. 4-2, 29-16.
Freddie gated second but slipped back to fourth on turn two, and such was the nature of the track he could not make up ground.
Heat 8: Madsen, Screen, Hefenbrock, Karlsson, 61.2. 5-1, 34-17.
From the gate.
Heat 9: Hamill, Wright, Stead, Lawson, 60.3. 3-3, 37-20.
Billy sent Stead wide on the first turn and stayed ahead from there.
Heat 10: Lindgren, Screen, Bjerre, Correy (f, rem), 60.2. 3-3, 40-23.
Wolves gated for the first time but Screen led out of the first turn, while Ronnie fell on turn two and remounted. Freddie the produced the first overtake of the meeting (yes, it took this long!) to take Screen for the lead and the win.
Heat 11: Crump, Morris, Louis, Hefenbrock, 60.6. 5-1, 45-24.
From the gate.
Heat 12: Stead, Correy, Madsen, Lawson, 60.7. 4-2, 49-26.
From the gate save for Will losing out to Madsen on the second bend.
Heat 13: Crump, Bjerre, Hamill, Louis, 59.3. 5-1, 54-27.
From the gate.
Heat 14: Lindgren (double), Wright, Morris, Hefenbrock, 60.0. 3-6, 57-33.
Freddie’s double ride was academic by now, but he produced the second overtake of the meeting to round Wright starting lap three.
Heat 15: Screen, Lindgren, Bjerre, Hamill (ret), 60.5. 4-2, 61-35.
Screen passed Freddie after half a lap to lead, while Billy retired on lap three to ensure that Wolves recorded 15 last places in as many races.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Very warm and sunny – unusual for Manchester!
Track: Pathetic, with no dirt at all.
Attendance: Extremely low.
Wolves Performance: Their worst for a long time – they did not adapt to the track, and gating lessons are desperately needed.
Entertainment: None whatsoever – only three passes in 15 races does not make a speedway meeting (not counting the tractor overtaking the water cart between heats!)
Referee: Nothing to do all evening.
Man of the Match: Only one Wolf stood out, and that was Freddie Lindgren.
Rider Ratings:
Chris Louis: 5 As an Ipswich regular he should have been more used to the slick surface
Magnus Karlsson: 2 Way behind in all three rides.
Ronnie Correy: 5 Looked below-par on one of his former tracks.
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Much the star of the night, and the only Wolf to overtake anything.
Billy Hamill: 4 See Ronnie Correy.
William Lawson: 4 Looked fast, but without gating this counted for nothing.
Christian Hefenbrock: 6 Good when he made the start.
The only saving grace for this one was the excellent curry before the start, but the match was one of the most forgettable in history. Next up it’s Knockout Cup action against Eastbourne, so let’s hope that our riders get some gating practice in!
