2 Martin Smolinski- E-E-E =0
3 Rory Schlein- 2-0-3-6-0 =11
4 Billy Janniro- 1*-2-0-3 =6+1
5 Chris Harris- 0-2-E-3-1 =6
6 Pawel Hlib- 1-1*-0-1 =3+1
7 Oliver Allen- 0-1-3-0 =4
The meeting took place with steady drizzling rain but I never felt that it would be enough to threaten the meeting although I am sure Coventry would have been performing the rain dance as things progressed.
Heat Details:
1 PK, Nicholls, MAGNUS, Smolinski exc 2 mins 4-2
55.05 Track Record
Smolinski was announced as still being at Watford Gap after missing an earlier flight. Fantastic win for Peter from the tapes who simply cleared off and left Nicholls in his wake. I didn’t think the time was near the track record but Yozzawolf was convinced – and was proved right.
2 CHRISTIAN, WILLIAM, Hlib, Allen 5-1 9-3
Christian eased Allen wide in the first turn and then led to the flag. William had to ride all of the lines to keep Allen behind him until Allen locked up and let Hlib through for the point.
3 FREDDIE, Schlein, Janniro, RONNIE 3-3 12-6
Freddie and Schlein rode side by side for half a lap until Freddie made an excellent move around the outside of the third and fourth turns to take the lead.
4 BILLY, CHRISTIAN, Allen, Harris f,rem 5-1 17-7
Allen and Christian gated well but the Coventry rider pushed Christian very wide but whilst concentrating on that he missed Billy Hamill slicing under him to take the lead. On the next lap Chris went in low and hard on the third bend to get a Wolves 5-1. Harris fell on the first bend but remounted to complete the race.
5 Nicholls, FREDDIE, RONNIE, Smolinski exc 2M 3-3 20-10
It was a Wolves 5-1 until Nicholls passed Ronnie on the inside at the end of the second lap. On the next lap he then went the long way round Freddie who lifted badly on the grippy bit on the exit of turn 4 to make it easier for Scotty. Still no Smolinski.
6 PK, Harris, Hlib, MAGNUS 3-3 23-13
A clear win for the skipper. Magnus was awful – a full 60 yards back.
7 BILLY, Janniro, WILLIAM, Schlein 4-2 27-15
Billy clears off for an unchallenged win while Janniro slows William down to allow Schlein to make a pass. William’s not too keen on this and shows Schlein by driving round him in the dirt at the end of the second lap.
8 Allen, CHRISTIAN, MAGNUS, T/S Harris f,exc. 3-3 30-18
Harris comes in as a Tactical substitute off 15m. Magnus led and Christian blocked Allen for 2 laps but then Harris fell at the back. In the re-run you just knew what was going to happen – and it did! Allen passed Christian up the back straight on the first lap and won.
9 Harris, FREDDIE, RONNIE, Hlib 3-3 33-21
From the tapes win for Harris. Hlib looked a little more interested as he pushed Ronnie fairly hard.
10 Schlein, PK, CHRISTIAN, Janniro 3-3 36-24
The Coventry pair gated well and took PK very wide and he had to lock up and lost loads of ground. But it looked like Janniro forgot to switch on the fuel (perhaps) and he slowed at the end of lap 1 to allow both Wolves past for a 3-3 before getting going again.
11 Nicholls (TR), BILLY, WILLIAM, Smolinski exc 2m 3-6 39-30
Nicholls on a tactical ride and Smolinski arrives – but can’t make it within the 2 minutes! Billy gates well but Nicholls is much quicker out of turn 2 and passed him up the straight to lead into the third bend.
12 Schlein (TR), RONNIE, CHRISTIAN, Allen 3-6 42-36
Schlein gates and is gone! Ronnie chases for a bit but is not quick enough. Allen hits the fence in third place to let Christian through on the inside for a team point (and a paid one).
13 BILLY, PK, Harris, Nicholls 5-1 47-37
Billy and Harris gate together but Billy pulls away. PK hangs Harris out to dry on the last bend of the first lap and the Wolves pair get a cool 5-1. Nicholls, having missed the start is nowhere to be seen.
14 Janniro, FREDDIE, Hlib, WILLIAM 2-4 49-41
Freddie was on a good, fast outside line coming out of the last bend on lap 1 when Janniro moved out and clattered him, allowing Hlib to go past. Freddie, being a gentleman, stayed on and later passed Hlib at the end of the next lap but once again fell foul of heat 14.
15 BILLY, Nicholls, FREDDIE, Schlein 4-2 53-43
PK not available for heat 15 due to an injury to his groin we are told. Great start from Billy who had Nicholls challenging on the outside for the whole of lap 1 but he chose the right line to thwart the Bee. Freddie tried hard to get second place by using the tight inside line but needed more grip or power.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Warm with fairly hard drizzle for most of the evening.
Track: The track seemed to handle the poor weather very well indeed and the quality of the racing was excellent again. Well demonstrated by PK’s track record being three tenths lower than the previous one!
Attendance: A very healthy crowd – in fact, a stoat of a crowd!
Wolves Performance: A competent performance from Wolves with Billy Hamill back to form and up to speed and most of the rest of the team weighing in with a good contribution.
Entertainment: Great racing in what could have been difficult track conditions.
Referee: (P. Clarke): Must have been OK because I didn’t even notice he was there.
Man of the Match: Billy Hamill just shades it for me. Nice job.
Rider Ratings: (with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 A good night’s racing again from PK apart from getting suckered by Schlein and Janniro. Excellent new track record in heat 1 in slightly unfavourable conditions.
Magnus Karlsson: 2 Extremely poor. Both points were gifted and he rarely looked capable of beating any opposition rider. Now very worrying.
Ronnie Correy: 5 A poor first ride but after that he did his job – just.
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 He gave Nicholls something to think about twice but should have beaten Harris in heat 9. Still a good night for Fred.
Billy Hamill: 9 Back on top Monmore form with top dollar machinery. Almost got the full house.
William Lawson 7 Dominant in the reserves race and then a couple of excellent rides to beat more experienced opposition.
Christian Hefenbrock: 9 Paid 12 from five rides is an excellent result and a major contribution towards the win. Thanks Christian.
It’s always a pleasure and a relief to beat Coventry at the Green. The ten point margin is something that we can work with when we go to Brandon so well done to the team tonight. Coventry seemed to misplay the Smolinski situation (I am sure they had other options) and this probably helped our cause. But then if he had been present they may not have been able to use the tactical moves which netted them an extra 6 points.
It was good to see Billy back on a machine that is competitive and PK in such awesome form. More worrying are the little injury niggles that Peter is having to contend with. Let’s hope that he is able to recover swiftly and fully and then continue to entertain us so fantastically.
Our reserves are worthy of a mention when you notice that they scored virtually double what the Coventry pair managed. Of course we may well be seeing Magnus in one of those positions come July 1st (if CVS does not make any team changes before that date) and then things may be a little different unless he can pick up his self-esteem and appear on bikes that are at least equal in capabilities with those of the opposition riders. No-one seems sure if it is the bikes or the rider that need fettling but whichever it is – it needs doing quickly and effectively.
Looking forward to the two Knock Out Cup meetings against Eastbourne this coming weekend and hoping very much that PK is fit to ride, but if he is not, that we get a guest for him that is able to perform in similar fashion. Other teams do it – so hopefully we will too.
