This would go down as a memorable sporting day. Glenn Hoddle resigned as Wolves manager. Fred Trueman died, and we stopped off at the Barley Mow pub in Selmeston to watch England go out of the World Cup in the traditional manner (penalties) to Portugal. So the signs weren’t great for a Wolves win… Christian was in Germany practicing for his Under 21 Semi Final and rider replacement was in operation for him. David Norris, Nicki Pedersen and Peter Karlsson all returned from injury (or did Pedersen move house?)
So far this season, we’d had the coldest meeting ever (Peterborough) and the windiest (Swindon). With the temperature reading 32 degrees, this must qualify as one of the hottest meetings on record.
Heat 1 - David Norris ; Peter Karlsson ; Edward Kennett ; William Lawson ; (4-2)(4-2)
PK nips inside Kennett on the 2nd bend to split the home pair.
Heat 2 - Cameron Woodward ; William Lawson ; Lewis Bridger ; Magnus Karlsson ; (4-2)(8-4)
Wolves make the start but Woodward rides a fine race up the inside to take the lead by the 2nd lap. Magnus drifts wide on the 2nd lap allowing Bridger through for the point.
Heat 3 - Adam Shields ; Ronnie Correy ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Dean Barker ; (3-3)(11-7)
From the gate with Shields riding a very wide line out by the fence to deny Ronnie.
Heat 4 - Billy Hamill ; Nicki Pedersen ; Magnus Karlsson ; Lewis Bridger(F) ; (2-4)(13-11)
“Give thy elbow unto him” adise the Wolves fans, somewhat biblically, and he does! Very hard first lap from Billy to shut out Pedersen, Bridger falls on the last bend but Magnus already has 3rd place wrapped up.
Heat 5 - Adam Shields ; Peter Karlsson ; Dean Barker ; Ronnie Correy ; (4-2)(17-13)
PK rounds Barker on the 2nd bend after another sluggish start. Shields still favouring the wide line on his way to a second win.
Heat 6 - David Norris ; Billy Hamill ; Edward Kennett ; William Lawson ; (4-2)(21-15)
The fast line is right out by the fence. Billy rides it perfectly for three and three quarter laps, hotly pursued by Norris, then inexplicably switches to the inside off the last bend and Norris promptly accepts the gift and rounds him. Don’t ask me…
Heat 7 - Nicki Pedersen ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Ronnie Correy ; Cameron Woodward ; (3-3)(24-18)
A good ride from Ronnie, who is in the wrong place for a lap or so, close to Freddie but trying to fend off Woodward. He rides himself out of trouble and holds him off for the point.
Heat 8 - Edward Kennett ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Magnus Karlsson ; Lewis Bridger(Fx) ; (3-3)(27-21)
This looks like Freddie’s race but Kennett has it won when Bridger gets his bike trapped under the fence and the race is stopped. We get an action replay in the rerun as Eddie beats Freddie to the racing line.
Heat 9 - Adam Shields ; Billy Hamill ; Dean Barker ; William Lawson ; (4-2)(31-23)
The track is now VERY dry and slick in the baking hot weather. It’s a race to the outside line on the 1st bend with little hope of passing.
Heat 10 - David Norris ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Edward Kennett ; Ronnie Correy ; (4-2)(35-25)
Freddie makes the gate but rides mid track. Don’t ask. Norris round the outside for the win, Kennett proves too fast for Ronnie and somehow finds a way through on the inside on lap 3.
We now have an interval, where Uncle Bob works his magic with the tractor and virtually relays the track in time for the last 5 heats. Very impressive and saves the meeting as a spectacle. The viewing of the pits is excellent at Arlington. Any hopes of a fightback look forlorn as the riders are battling to stay awake and hydrated in the intense heat. Adam Shields wins the world sweating championship hands down. He looks like he’s just stepped out of the shower!
Heat 11 - Nicki Pedersen ; Peter Karlsson (Tactical Ride) ; Magnus Karlsson ; Cameron Woodward ; (3-5)(38-30)
PK takes a double pointer and looks fast but can’t catch a quick starting Pedersen. A better ride from Magnus who holds off Woodward for 3rd.
Heat 12 - Lewis Bridger ; Dean Barker ; Ronnie Correy ; William Lawson ; (5-1)(43-31)
Wolves fans are looking to Peter Adams for inspiration here. Will he gamble on Billy or Freddie as a golden double in place of the out of touch William? What is there to lose? He doesn’t…
We need a fast start from Ronnie but don’t get it and some sensible team riding from Barker secures the 5-1. 12 points down and hopes are fading fast…
Heat 13 - Nicki Pedersen ; Billy Hamill (Tactical Ride) ; Peter Karlsson ; David Norris(R) ; (3-5)(46-36)
Pedersen is away, PK at the back when Norris’ bike expires.
Heat 14 - Adam Shields ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Cameron Woodward ; Magnus Karlsson ; (4-2)(50-38)
Freddie edges ahead from the start but again isn’t ruthless enough and Shields rounds him on the 2nd bend. Magnus nowhere this time.
Heat 15 - Adam Shields ; Nicki Pedersen ; Fredrik Lindgren(Fx) ; Billy Hamill(X) ; (5-0)(55-38)
PK is clearly not fit, so it’s Billy and Freddie but the smart money is on a home 5-1. Hamill anticipates the start and almost gets away with a flyer, the tapes rising and just catching his helmet (ouch). He’s sent back 15 metres, but is maybe 10 metres back when the tapes go up a second time! This time he’s excluded (first time I’ve seen this). Freddie leads briefly in the rerun and tries to shut Shields out but the Aussie squeezes through a tiny gap to complete his maximum. Pedersen is in full “rag doll” mode, his head bouncing around alarmingly as he charges after Freddie looking his usual picture of self restraint and style. He dives inside going down the back straight, forcing our man wide where he gets into trouble and falls heavily. The referee excludes Freddie and awards a 5-0 to the home side. Hard to judge from where we stood, but it looked like the correct decision. What a great way to end the night!

Verdict: With the Eagles such dangerous opponents at Monmore, we were hoping to keep this one close for the return leg. Simply put, Wolves tried hard but just weren’t good enough as the home side provided 14 race winners. We need two snookers and a miracle to win now.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Hot, sticky and humid.
Track: Good considering the weather. Some decent racing.
Attendance: A malnourished water vole. The start was delayed until 8pm to allow the depressed England fans time to reach the stadium. Apart from us, most of them decided to drown their sorrows at home or in the pub.
Wolves Performance: Effort: Good. Results: Dismal.
Entertainment: Small crowd, little atmosphere, heavy defeat. What do you think?
Referee: Paul Carrington seemed to get everything about right.
Man of the Match: Billy Hamill was our only race winner.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 5 Didn’t look fit but I can’t criticise him for giving it a go.
Christian Hefenbrock: R/R produced 3+1, probably what Christian would have scored looking at his heats.
Ronnie Correy: 5 Summed up the Wolves night. Tried hard, ultimately not quite good enough.
Fredrik Lindgren: 5 Didn’t beat a heat leader in 6 rides.
Billy Hamill: 6 Good win over Pedersen which proved to be out only race win.
William Lawson 4 His Arlington debut and hopefully can put the experience to good use. It’s only 1,456 miles from home!
Magnus Karlsson 4 Small signs of improvement, a long way to go.
Never fear, there’s always the Craven Shield!
Mark Rowe.
