Swindon held a 10 point advantage from the first leg.
Bonus point was expected to be close, with Swindon's usual Monmore form they shouldn't have troubled the home boys. Hamill & PK are known to be struggling with injuries, Freddie isn't flyin and Hefenbrock isn't yet fully adapted to life the main body of the team. Correy is riding well, Magnus looked better from reserve last week but Suchanek was an unknown quantity as were Miedzinski & Gafurov. Richardson & Ulamek are known to not like the Monmore shale, Korneliussen struggled last year.
Adams won the toss and chose gates 1 & 3 in heat #1.
Heat Results
Heat 01: Adams, Karlsson, Hefenbrock, Gafurov 3-3 56.15
Korneliussen touched the tapes replaced by Gafurov. Adams from tapes to flag, with Wolves in close attendance for the first two laps. Christian dropped by lap 3, PK knows there's nothing wide this early in the meeting and can only follow as Capt Clean rides the white lime with great aplomb. Gafurov lifted at the start and never looked settled.
Heat 02: Karlsson, Korneliussen, Gafurov, Suchanek 3-3 6-6 58.09
Easy win for Magnus. Gafurov again lifted at the start but recovered to round Suchanek on turns 3 & 4. Suchanek came back underneath Gafurov on the exit of turn 2 lap 2, Suchanek held on, with Gafurov looking quicker on the wider line until the back straight lap 3 where Suchanek lifted allowing Gafurov up the inside of him as they entered turn 3.
Heat 03: Lindgren, Richardson, Correy, Miedzinski 4-2 10-8 58.21
Freddie gated and was gone, but Richardson & Correy neck and neck until turns 3 & 4 where Richardson's wider line prevailed.
Heat 04: Re-run Ulamek, Hamill, M Karlsson, Gafurov F-Exc 3-3 13-11 59.69
Billy gated clear, Gafurov falls turn 2 exit gets back up, Magnus threatening Ulamek in turns 3 & 4, Gafurov goes down again. Race stopped. Re-run from the gate with Ulamek riding a sensible smooth line.
Heat 05: Correy, Lindgren, Adams, Gafurov 5-1 18-12 59.37
Correy gets a flyer! Both Robins go too wide on exit of turn 2 and Freddie goes through. Adams looks at his machine embarrassed and never threatens.
Heat 06: Karlsson, Ulamek, Hefenbrock, Korneliussen 4-2 22-14 59.01
Ulamek gated but PK keeps it wide open around turn 2 to round him.
Heat 07: Miedzinski, Hamill, Richardson, Suchanek 2-4 24-18 60.08
Billy makes the same mistake Adams did in heat 5 drifting too wide exiting turn 2 and Miedzinki had obviously been watching to take the lead. At the back Suchanek yields weakly to Richardson in turn 4, lap 1. There's only one line, if someone's riding that and doesn't make a mistake nobody's over taking anyone.
Heat 08: Re-run Miedzinski, Karlsson, Gafurov, Hefenbrock F-Exc 2-4 26-22 60.63
First running Hefenbrock takes a way, way to wide line around turns 1 & 2 and rears exiting the corner, then somehow spins widely in mid air before hitting the shale - nasty looking, down for a while but up & walking.
In the rerun, Swindon gate on a 5-1 but Magnus shows more bottle and aggression in one heat than previously all year rounding Gafurov in turn 4, then closing in and almost repeating the dosage on Miedzinski.
Heat 09: Ulamek, Lindgren, Korneliussen, Correy (tapes, 15m) 2-4 28-26 60.27
Korneliussen is bouncing like a Mexican jumping bean off gate four, his movement sends unsettles Correy on 3 who touches the tapes. Correy excluded but will go off 15m. Mistake Mr Adams, bring in Magnus Karlsson!
Second attempt is from the gate. Correy closed on Korneliussen but was never going to catch & pass him.
Heat 10: Richardson, Miedzinski, Karlsson, Hefenbrock 1-5 29-31 59.63
Richardson gates, PK looks like he'll repeat what he did in heat 6 but Richardson takes his line exiting turn 2. PK chases the Robins but they're riding smooth and not making any mistakes, Hefenbrock struggling at the back after his fall. Mistake Mr Adams why not get Suchanek's last ride out the way as Hefenbrock clearly isn't 100%. PK has 'words' with Richardson on the way to the pits.
Heat 11: Adams, Hamill, Karlsson, Gafurov 3-3 32-34 59.59
Magnus replaces Suchanek. Adams gates and Gafurov doesn't, filled my program in on second lap.
Heat 12: Correy, Miedzinski, Karlsson, Korneliussen 4-2 36-36 59.64
Correy gates and is clear, Magnus doesn't but picks off the woefully slow Korneliussen on the outside of turn 2, lap 3.
Heat 13: Adams, Karlsson, Hamill, Ulamek 3-3 39-39 58.94
Adams gates, PK threatens down the back straight and looks like he might get by up the inside entered turn 3 twice but the wider line (sorry only line) around turns 3 & 4 pulls Adams clear. Ulamek didn't gate and found his usual Monmore form.
Heat 14: Richardson, Lindgren, Gafurov, Suchanek 2-4 41-43 60.18
Richardson gates and is gone, Freddie as usual missed it from gate 4. Suchanek looks as though he might hold off Gafurov but is riding way to low, the Russian takes his time but eventually picks Suchanek off on turn 2 lap 4. Probably winning the meeting for the Robins, with the track ideal for gaters and Adams being the most consistent of that breed.
Heat 15: Adams, Karlsson, Lindgren, Richardson 3-3 44-46 58.43
From the gate (though Freddie made it from gate 4!), Richardson bottled it and played follow my leader for 4 laps, Adams never troubled.
Weather: Warm & wet.
Track: Heavy and sodden. There was only one racing line, most of the night.
Attendance: Not as many as usual, rain & it being shown on Sky I imagine the causes.
Wolves Performance: Poor, though the conditions were a factor.
Entertainment: Not up to Monmore's usual high standard in 2006, again the damn weather.
Referee (Graham Flint): Didn't get anything wrong, couldn't have awarded heat 4 it was only lap 1, Correy did touch the tapes, but should have warned Korneliussen about his bobbing back and forth all evening.
Man of the Match: Tough call. Nobody really excelled. I'll give it to Magnus Karlsson for an up turn in determination, aggression and bottle. Freddie or Correy could have taken it also.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 5 failed to beat opposite number Adams in three attempts and only one heat win.
Christian Hefenbrock: 6 was on the pace until nasty looking fall.
Ronnie Correy: 7 only let down by his tape touching, otherwise very good.
Fredrik Lindgren: 7 Needed to win heat 14, but other than that hard to pick fault.
Billy Hamill: 5 failed to win a heat all night.
Thomas Suchanek: 4 first appearance, refused to ride wide enough to be involved, can gate but finding Monmore in these conditions on your first visit must be intimidating.
Magnus Karlsson: 8 Showed aggression and bottle, fought hard for his points.
