Monday 31 July 2006, Wolves 56 Ipswich 35, Elite League (A)
Wolves win the bonus point.
Parry’s International Wolves: 56
1. Peter Karlsson 3,3,2,3,R = 11
2. Christian Hefenbrock R,0,3,1* = 4+1
3. Ronnie Correy 1,2*,1*,1 = 5+2
4. Freddie Lindgren 3,3,2,3,3 = 14
5. Billy Hamill 2,2,3,2* = 9+1
6. William Lawson 3,1*,2*,1 = 7+2
7. Magnus Karlsson 2*,F,1,3 = 6+1
Ipswich Witches: 35
1. Pepe Protasiewicz 1*,1,F = 2+1
2. Kim Jansson 2,Fx,2,X = 4
3. Robert Miskowiak F,Fx,R,2 = 2
4. Chris Louis 2,6!,3,2,1* = 14+1
5. Mark Loram 3,2,3,1!,2 = 11
6. Danny King X,1*,F,0,0 = 1+1
7. Tobias Kroner X,1,0,0 = 1
Pre Meeting: Both teams are at full strength with Pepe and Miskowiak the speedway equivalents of rocking horse poo – visiting Polish riders at Monmore Green. Wolves need a win by more than 8 to take the bonus point and keep their faltering playoff hopes alive. Heavy afternoon showers left the track looking very sticky but the match started on time with both sides apparently happy to ride. Ipswich won the toss and took gates 1 and 3.
Heat 1 P Karlsson, Jansson, Protasiewicz, Hefenbrock (EF)3-3 56.13
Easy win for PK and Christian is 2nd until his engine fails. Both Witches trail round way behind.
Heat 2 Lawson, M Karlsson, King(X), Kroner (X) 5-0 awarded 8-3
Kroner stops at the start, an aggressive first bend from King puts him ahead until he stops on the 1st bend of lap 2 (looks like his engine seized). Magnus falls trying to avoid him and the referee correctly awards Wolves the 5-0.
Heat 3 Lindgren, Louis, Correy, Miskowiak (F) 4-2 57.09 12-5
Freddie storms ahead from Louis, Ronnie passes Miskowiak going into the 2nd lap as the Polish rider falls comically on the 2nd bend.
Heat 4 Loram, Hamill, Kroner, M Karlsson (F) 2-4 57.79 14-9
Loram rides the track motor cross style pulling huge wheelies on the straights and tearing around the bends. Magnus comes to grief on the 2nd lap while 3rd.
Heat 5 Lindgren, Correy, Protasiewicz, Jansson (Fx) 5-1 Awarded 19-10
Another cracking win for Freddie, and Ronnie joins him at the front with an excellent move on the back straight. Jansson falls at the back gifting a point to the simply awful Pepe at the back – or “GP Star” as Scott Field dryly describes him much to the crowd’s amusement.
Heat 6 P Karlsson, Loram, King, Hefenbrock 3-3 57.6 22-13
A superb race – PK leads hotly pursued by Loram. Christian passes King for 3rd only to make a mistake on the dodgy 2nd bend and allow the Ipswich youngster past. At the front, PK makes a slight error and Loram brilliantly passes him coming out of the 2nd bend of the last lap. It looks all over but PK, as ever has other ideas and somehow wins it with an inside pass on the run in to the line. Brilliant speedway from two 100% racers attacking the sticky track.
Heat 7 Louis(TR), Hamill, Lawson, Miskowiak (Fx) 3-6 58.56 25-19
Billy takes the lead in a very close first lap with both Ipswich riders in close pursuit. Miskowiak goes down in a heap on the 2nd lap 1st bend as William tries to pass him. It appears that there must have been contact but referee David Watters excludes the Ipswich man. In the rerun, Louis takes full advantage of his tactical ride with an excellent pass of Billy on the 2nd bend.
Heat 8 Hefenbrock, Jansson, M Karlsson, King(Fell) 4-2 59.64 29-21
King falls on the 1st bend. Christian takes a fine win to put the aggregate scores level.
Heat 9 Loram, Lindgren, Correy, Kroner 3-3 57.26 32-24
Freddie storms past Loram on the back straight but goes into the Park bend too hot and drifts wide. Ronnie is cautious about passing a wild looking Tobias Kroner but picks his spot on the back straight of the last lap.
Heat 10 Louis, P Karlsson, Hefenbrock, Miskowiak (ret) 3-3 58.22 35-27
Pk hits the dodgy spot on the 2nd bend and almost falls. He’s quickly past Miskowiak but can’t catch Chris Louis.
Heat 11 Hamill, Lawson, Protasiewicz (X), Jansson (X) 5-0 59.87 40-27
A very bizarre heat. Jansson falls on the 1st bend and retires. Pepe leads into the 3rd bend but slides off right in front of Billy and William who both lay their bikes down. Another Wolves 5-0? You’d think so, although bizarrely the referee doesn’t stop the race. The riders have other ideas and all return to the pits! What now? A 0-0? Eventually both green and yellow exclusion lights come on – the correct decision albeit rather belated – and the Wolves pair complete the second 5-0 of the night in the rerun.
Heat 12 M Karlsson, Miskowiak, Correy, King 4-2 58.52 44-29
A fine win for Magnus puts Wolves 7 points up for the bonus point. We now have an interval and after some track work the racing strip appears back to normal and rides much better in the last three heats.
Heat 13 P Karlsson, Hamill, Loram(TR), King 5-1 57.74 49-30
Loram wears black and white but a storming ride from the Wolves pair give him no chance. Excellent aggressive riding from PK and Billy.
Heat 14 Lindgren, Louis, Lawson, Kroner 4-2 57.96 53-32
Freddie is simply flying tonight. Another excellent ride.
Heat 15 Lindgren, Loram, Louis, P Karlsson (EF) 3-3 57.79 56-35
An engine problem for PK denies Wolves another 5-1. The Swede intelligently nurses the bike round for 3 laps just in case an away rider falls or stops – is the skipper professional or what?
Verdict: A very difficult track and credit for both sides for getting stuck in. Excellent team showing for Wolves who all looked good. Can we keep it up? For whatever reason Ipswich had much more problems with the track. My guess is that having won easily at Monmore on a terribly slick track last season they came prepared for slick conditions. The rain left the track very different and they couldn’t cope…
Weather: A fine evening but heavy afternoon rain had taken its toll.
Track: Stickier than Sticky the stick insect who got stuck on a sticky bun.
Attendance: Lower than normal as the holiday season appears to have had an effect.
Wolves Performance: Excellent. Attacked the track and all scored well.
Entertainment: Very good. Thrills and spills.
Referee: David Watters – a couple of strange decisions (see report)
Man of the Match: Has to be Peter Karlsson. Only kidding Christine, PK was good but Freddie was even better!
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Brilliant win in heat 6 and a smart move to keep going in heat 15.
Christian Hefenbrock: 7 Score hampered by an engine failure. Recovered very well from a second ride last.
Ronnie Correy: 7 Fine overtaking and another good backup performance.
Fredrik Lindgren: 9 A brilliant performance. One slip away from a maximum.
Billy Hamill: 8 Not quite at his best until a great heat 13.
William Lawson: 7 Reminds me of the old Jasper Carrot joke about his mother in law. Was never in an accident but he saw hundreds!
Magnus Karlsson : 7 Looks a different rider at reserve.
Mark Rowe.
