Ronnie Correy R/R (0) (0) (1) (2) =(3)
Billy Hamill 3 2 3 3 2 =13
Freddie Lindgren 3 1* 3 0 =7+1
William Lawson 3 0 0 1 0 1 =5
Magnus Karlsson 1 0 2 1 0 =4
Cheetahs:
Todd Wiltshire 3 3 2 1* 0 =9+1
Davey Watt 1 1 2* 1* =5+2
David Howe 2 3 1 3 =9
Adam Skornicki 1* 0 0 0 =1+1
David Norris 2 2 2 2 3 =11
Lubos Tomicek 0 0 0 =0
Eric Andersson 2 1* 3 1 2 =9+1
Yet another very close Monmore encounter, as we are accustomed to seeing this year, but the Oxford side certainly gave Wolves a few frights along the way. Time and again the Wolves looked to have thrown it all away with needless slip-ups, while rider replacement did not work well – Ronnie would surely have scored more than three points.
Billy made a great return to form, and Christian seemed to finally settle into the number two spot, and these factors combined with another good performance from PK ensured a superb match – only once were the sides separated by more than two points.
Oxford won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Wiltshire, P Karlsson, Watt, Hefenbrock, 56.49. 2-4, 2-4.
PK never recovered after being sent wide by Wiltshire on the first turn, and he slipped again on lap two almost allowing Watt into second.
Heat 2: Lawson, Andersson, M Karlsson, Tomicek, 57.94. 4-2 6-6.
Magnus gated but did his usual trick of running wide on turn two, and Will went through to win from Andersson to level things up.
Heat 3: Hamill, Howe, Skornicki, Lawson, 56.79. 3-3, 9-9.
A good scrap for the lead saw Billy beat Howe home, while Will closed on Adam on the last lap – hard to believe, but this would be the Donut King’s only point of the night.
Heat 4: Lindgren, Norris, Andersson, M Karlsson, 56.83. 3-3 12-12.
Freddie led all the way, while Magnus briefly took third only to be put wide by Andersson on lap three.
Heat 5: Wiltshire, Hamill, Watt, Lawson, 57.03. 2-4, 14-16.
Wiltshire rounded Billy on lap one to lead, while this time the scrap was between Watt and Will for third, the Cheetah winning through.
Heat 6: P Karlsson, Norris, Hefenbrock, Tomicek, 57.11. 4-2, 18-18.
Wolves made a decent gate, but Doris made it into second at turn two, chased all the way by Christian.
Heat 7: Howe, M Karlsson, Lindgren, Skornicki, 57.92. 3-3, 21-21.
Howe produced a fine ride to go from third to first by lap three, with Freddie seemingly unable to keep his front wheel on the floor.
Heat 8: Andersson, Watt, Lawson, Hefenbrock, 58.31. 1-5, 22-26.
Christian made possibly the worst gate ever seen at Monmore (he literally appeared to watch the other riders leave the tapes!) and Oxford were away. Will did try to sneak down the inside into turn three for the first time, but it didn’t work.
Heat 9: Hamill, Norris, M Karlsson, Tomicek, 56.92. 4-2, 26-28.
A great ride from Billy sees him track Doris for three laps, before sweeping around the outside into the lead heading into the last lap.
Heat 10: P Karlsson, Hefenbrock, Howe, Skornicki, 57.07. 5-1, 31-29.
PK leads all the way but Christian produces one of his best ever rides at Monmore with some fantastic defensive work to somehow keep the two ex-Wolves behind him for four laps.
Heat 11: Lindgren, Wiltshire, Watt, Lawson, 57.40. 3-3, 34-32.
Freddie leads all the way to hand Wiltshire his first defeat of the evening.
Heat 12: Howe, Hefenbrock, Andersson, M Karlsson, 58.51. 2-4, 36-36.
The Cheetahs pairing somehow went either side of Christian on turn four of the first lap, with Christian winning second place back on lap three.
Heat 13: P Karlsson, Norris, Wiltshire, Lindgren, 57.51. 3-3, 39-39.
Oxford gated well this time, but PK produced the ride of the season to take second on the inside of Wiltshire on lap two, before switching to the outside to blast around Doris starting the last lap for a memorable win – superb stuff! Freddie only just lost out on a point after a great attacking display.
Heat 14: Hamill, Andersson, Lawson, Skornicki, 57.97. 4-2, 43-41.
Wolves led from the start but Will lost out to Andersson on the first lap, and Oxford needed a 5-1 in the nominated heat to take the win.
Heat 15: Norris, Hamill, P Karlsson, Wiltshire, 57.45. 3-3, 46-44.
A very close first lap saw Doris emerge in front, and with Wolves holding second and third everything was in order for them to win. Billy, however, had other ideas, and on the final turn of the match he attempted a do-or-die outside run on Doris, almost hitting the home straight fence and just getting over the line second. Whew!
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Fine weather once again.
Track: Reasonable – a good racing surface once again.
Attendance: Average crowd.
Wolves Performance: Yet another “almost, but not quite” performance left some fans nervous going into the last heat!
Entertainment: Some excellent racing, with heat 13 being the best by far!
Referee (Jim Lawrence supervising trainee Dave Robinson): No decisions to make.
Man of the Match: Although PK and Will both have a claim to it, it goes to Billy Hamill for his consistent racing.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 Brilliant racing – some great passes that only PK can produce at Monmore!
Christian Hefenbrock: 6 Looked more comfortable with his new team position.
Ronnie Correy: R/R
Billy Hamill 9 His form just keeps on improving of late.
Fredrik Lindgren: 6 Low score not for lack of trying.
William Lawson: 6 Another good evening from the young reserve.
Magnus Karlsson: 6 Gated well once again.
Next week is a busy one, with a home match against Belle Vue (PK v Jason Crump for the first time at Monmore this year!) followed by trips to Peterborough on Thursday and Coventry on Friday. Let’s hope for a huge glut of points to help our push for the playoffs.
