HEATS
1 Pedersen, PK, Boyce, CHRISTIAN f,exc 2-4
At the first attempt PK and Christian gated well but Christian, on the outside, performed a beautiful pirouette and ended up hitting the fence quite hard. Thank goodness for the air fence (and that wouldn’t be the last time we thought that during the meeting). You’ve already guessed that Pedersen gated in the re-run and led to the flag. PK chased and was always very close but the only line was the inside and so there was no way past.
2 Davidsson, WILLIAM, MAGNUS, Wethers f 3-3 5-7
All four riders struggled with the early track conditions as Magnus led from the start but was quickly passed by Davidsson and then ‘wobbled’ terribly at the end of the lap to let William through into 2nd. A large rut appeared on turn 4 which most of them hit but Wethers gave it the closest inspection at the back.
3 BILLY, RONNIE, Walasek, Kasprzak dnf 5-1 10-8
Poole gate for a 5-1 but Billy had other ideas and brilliantly ‘eased’ both of them wide in the second bend and Ronnie used his head and cleverly cut back through the gap to join Billy for a clear Wolves maximum heat advantage. Both Poole riders could easily have been described as rubbish after the first bend and they finished the race approximately 150 yards after the Wolves pair. In fact Kasprzak didn’t bother to cross the finish line at all.
4 Lindback, MAGNUS, Wethers, FREDDIE f exc 2-4 12-12
The Poole pair gated and Freddie tried an outside line sweep but spun round in the deep stuff and fell. In the restart Poole gated again but Magnus lunged into the first turn and determinedly clashed elbows with Wethers who backed off and settled for third.
5 BILLY, Pedersen, RONNIE, Boyce 4-2 16-14
Another great first bend for Billy but this time on the outside. Pedersen somehow burst out of the very tight second bend ahead of Ronnie who was still looking very keen. Boyce wobbled around uselessly at the back.
6 PK, Lindback, CHRISTIAN, Davidsson 4-2 20-16
Peter and Christian gated very well and we were on a 5-1 for a while until Lindback, with a little more speed and determination passed Christian up the back straight on lap 1. No challenge from Davidsson.
7 FREDDIE, Walasek, WILLIAM, Kasprzak 4-2 24-18
Freddie missed the gate and chased Kasprzak into the third bend where he turned tighter and went underneath the Poole rider to take the lead. The Poole riders switched places and William Lawson also then passed Kasprzak and put great pressure on Walasek who was out of control for most of the race. Unfortunately Walasek’s inability to hold any sort of line meant that Will was inadvertently blocked every time he tried to pass.
8 CHRISTIAN, Boyce, MAGNUS f.exc Wethers f,exc 3-2 27-20
Magnus started well but drifted wide in the first turn and clipped Christian which meant they both fell (the second time Chris had been in the fence). Magnus was excluded for being the PCS. He had a very heavy fall. In the first rerun Christian gated well and led. Wethers fell awkwardly at the end of the lap and was very lucky that Boyce had the skill and bottle to lay his machine down before the impact. Wethers was excluded – again as PCS. Boyce made the start in the next rerun but Christian cut back well and passed him just as he slid off on the 2nd bend. Boyce remounted and pootled round half a lap behind for the 2 points.
9 Lindback, BILLY, RONNIE, Davidsson 3-3 30-23
Lindback rode a good inside line to lead out of the first bend and Billy was unable to get close enough to challenge. Ronnie took an easy third place.
10 PK, CHRISTIAN, Walasek, Kasprzak 5-1 35-24
Peter and Christian made superb starts and left the abysmal wobble brothers in their wake.
11 Pedersen TR, FREDDIE, Boyce, WILLIAM 2-7 37-31
Pedersen led from tapes to flag. Freddie missed the start and wound on the power coming out of turn 2 which pushed both William and Boyce very wide. William pressured Boyce but as he tried a pass he locked up and the chance was gone.
Interval and track grading
12 Kasprzak, WILLIAM, RONNIE, Davidsson 3-3 40-34
Magnus’ withdrawal from the meeting was announced. Kasprzak, who had been worse than useless all night, took advantage of the drier and regraded track and led all the way with William trying hard to get past.
13 PK, Pedersen, Lindback, FREDDIE f,exc 3-3 43- 37
A very tight first bend saw Lindback and Freddie pushed very wide so all four were recalled for a rerun. Peter made a good start and was followed by Pedersen. Freddie tried the outside line after the start and may have been better cutting back as Lindgren took him very wide again. They battled for two laps with Lindback almost parking his bike on turn 2, lap 2 to block Fred but then Freddie tried too hard on the third bend and span and fell but cleared the track for PK to go on and win. It is worth noting that the lines that Freddie Lindgren was using were very different to his normal ones.
14 BILLY, WILLIAM, Walasek, Wethers f,exc 5-1 48-38
There was a brief halt in proceedings while the pits rang the referee. Talk on the terrace was that Poole, now being unable to win the meeting, were questioning the track conditions as some of their riders were made to look amateurish during the meeting!
This heat was very circus-like. Walasek led until lap 1 bend 3 when he swapped places with Wethers who was in last place. Bizarre! Wethers, now leading the race, locked up and fell at the beginning of lap 2 and was hit by Billy Hamill who was directly behind him. The crash looked awful but eventually both riders got to their feet with Wethers excluded as the cause of the stoppage. In the rerun Walasek gated and led for a short while before first Billy Hamill and then William Lawson overtook him on the back straight.
15 PK, Lindback, BILLY, Pedersen 4-2 52-40
PK and Lindback tussled in the first bend with Peter emerging in front and riding away for a clear win. Billy beat Pedersen also in the first turn and then set off after Lindback. Pedersen, having messed up the start and first bend, lost all interest in the race and in entertaining the crowd and pulled up with a face like a smacked bum (allegedly).
Comment
The difference between the teams was their enthusiasm for racing on a track that was admittedly difficult but not over-wet by any means. Most of the Poole team were shown up to be unable to adapt to conditions other than the smooth, slick, tyre-packed surface they like to prepare on their own track. Some of the Poole team came across as petulant and/or amateurish when they forgot who was ultimately paying their wages and didn’t even bother to make it look as if they were racing. If I had been a Poole fan that had travelled the near 400 mile round trip to watch Walasek, Kasprzak and Davidsson absolve themselves of any racing and entertaining responsibilities I would have been extremely unhappy to say the least. Credit to Lindback for 100% effort and Pedersen for the same effort in his first four rides only.
Wolves took on the task with vigour and were worthy winners of the meeting. I don’t think our riders liked the track conditions any more than Poole did but they showed that they will make an effort whatever the situation. Peter Karlsson once again racked up a super 14 point haul and was well supported by Billy Hamill who contested some fiery first turns during the meeting. William’s return from injury was excellent with some skilled overtaking and death defying turns. Christian became closely acquainted with the air fence several times and still contributed to the entertainment very well. Ronnie continued his renaissance with a very solid paid eight points and especially clever riding in heat 3. Freddie had a bit of a mare as he found himself to be in track positions that were unusual to say the least but he still gave 100% effort – perhaps more at times and this over-trying may have been part of his problem. Magnus looked as if he was going to have a great meeting until he fell heavily and was forced to withdraw.
Twelve points is a decent lead to take back to Wimborne Road for the second leg and if conditions are anything other than perfect on their track we may well have a chance of taking all three points from Poole. Their supporters were well aware that we were a big threat last Wednesday and were relieved when the postponement was announced.
Weather: Dry for the meeting but a big downpour an hour before the start.
Track: Difficult but capable of good racing after the first few heats. One or two inconsistent patches caught riders out.
Attendance: A very good attendance – a Bank Holiday Stoat.
Wolves Performance: We tackled the track and the opposition with equal enthusiasm and were rewarded with a deserved victory.
Entertainment: Not up to the incredibly high standard of racing we have seen at the Green this year but nevertheless enjoyable (if only to watch Poole struggle!)
Referee: Graham Flint: All decisions were correct in my opinion, although only after I had watched the replays on the monitors!
Man of the Match: Peter Karlsson wins this week’s award for leading the team by good example.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Only beaten once - in the first heat where there was only one line and no passing was possible.
Ronnie Correy: 7 Determined racing from the Rocket. He is maintaining a good level of form at the moment.
Fredrik Lindgren: 5 Not enough points from a number 5. He was quick enough but did not seem to adapt to the conditions as well as others.
Billy Hamill: 8 Billy had some good battles and rode extremely well. Able to make passes on both the inside and outside.
William Lawson: 7 Great comeback. Has he signed for 2007 yet?
Christian Hefenbrock: 7 Considering the falls he had this was a good score. He has shaken off the illness and provided excellent backup.
Magnus Karlsson: 6 Had a good couple of rides before injuring himself and withdrawing.
