Matej Zagar 3 2 3 3 3 = 14
Ben Barker 0 0 0 = 0
Mark Lemon 3 1 1* 3 = 8+1
Parry’s International Wolves:
Peter Karlsson 1 3 (4) 2 2 = 12
Christian Hefenbrock F 0 1*= 1+1
Ronnie Correy 0 F 0 = 0
Billy Hamill 2 (6) 2 2 0 = 12
Freddie Lindgren 2 0 1 0 = 3
William Lawson 1* 1 3 0 1 = 6+1
Magnus Karlsson 2 0 0 0 1* = 3+1
Toss: Reading win the toss and choose gates 2 and 4.
Encouraged by Peter Adams insistence that we can still reach the play offs a decent gathering of Wolves fans turn out to see if the team can rise to the occasion and at least go down fighting if they cannot gain the necessary win to take the bonus point.
Heat 1: Hancock, Kolodziej, Peter, Christian(F) , 59.90, 5-1.
The Reading pair gate and disappear into the distance. Peter can do nothing to catch them. Christian is way last and struggling when he falls on bend 1 of lap 3.
Heat 2: Lemon, Magnus, William, Barker, 63.15, 3-3, 8-4.
A fast start from Lemon sees him pull away to win in quite a slow time. Barker threatens William for third for a lap before falling back.
Heat 3: McGowan, Billy, Gjedde, Ronnie, 60.61, 4-2, 12-6.
At the first time of asking McGowan from gate 4 and Billy from gate 3 clash at the first bend and McGowan falls. Referee Frank Ebdon orders a Re Run with all 4 riders, which to be honest seems quite generous to Wolves as Billy did tend to give McGowan a bit of a nudge.
In the Re Run Billy makes a fast start but McGowan drives around him on the first 2 bends to pull away. Ronnie makes a dreadful start and tails off way at the back.
Heat 4: Zagar, Freddie, Lemon, Magnus, 60.45, 4-2, 16-8.
Good start from the Wolves pair and Freddie leads. Zagar and Lemon force their way past Magnus around bends 1 and 2 and Zagar sets off in pursuit of Freddie. Freddie leads by about 20 yards but Zagar steadily reels him in and forces past on the back straight of lap 3. Good ride by Zagar but with the lead he had Freddie should really have won the heat.
Heat 5: Peter, Gjedde, McGowan, Christian, 60.68, 3-3, 19-11.
Lightning start by Peter but Christian is left again. Peter flies away and can’t be caught, but Christian is so far behind at the end that a search party is almost sent out to find him.
Heat 6: Hancock, Kolodziej, William, Freddie, 60.87, 5-1, 24-12 .
The Reading pair trap and are gone. Freddie is struggling at the back and can’t make up any ground.
Heat 7: Billy(TR), Zagar, Lemon, Ronnie (F), (Awarded), 3-6, 27-18.
Reading press the panic button (!!??) and replace Barker with Lemon. Fast start from Billy and he leads, Ronnie nips inside Zagar on the first 2 bends, but Zagar re passes him on bend 4 of lap 2. Lemon gets past Ronnie on bend 3 of lap 2. Ronnie falls on the first bend of lap 3 when under no pressure and struggles to remove his bike from the air fence. By this time Zagar has closed in on Billy and is lining him up to make a challenge. Ebdon has no choice to stop the race with Ronnie still on the track as the riders exit bend 4 of lap 3 with Zagar quite close on Billy’s tail. Ebdon decides to award the race, much to the disgust of the home fans. The decision does seem a bit controversial as Zagar was beginning to challenge and the race was by no means decided – but never look a gift horse in the mouth!!
Heat 8: William, Kolodziej, Lemon, Magnus, 60.99,3-3, 30-21 .
Christian is replaced by William.
The Reading pair gate, but William makes up ground to the first bend and in a superb move sweeps around the Reading twosome on the first 2 bends. Kolodziej presses over the last 2 laps but William keeps his composure for an excellent win. The ride of the night by a Wolves rider.
Heat 9: McGowan, Gjedde, Freddie, Lawson, 60.96, 5-1, 35-22.
McGowan gates and pulls away. William is 2nd with Freddie trying to cover him inside, but Gjedde is on his way. On the home straight of lap 1 Gjedde makes his move, and Freddie misses his chance to cover him. Gjedde rounds the Wolves pair on the first 2 bends of lap 2 and there is no catching him after that. Freddie passes William for the point on lap 3.
Heat 10: Hancock, Hamill, Kolodziej, Correy, 61.11, 4-2, 39-24.
Race decided from the gate – the anticipated battle between the ex spoonland twosome never really materialised as Hancock was gone. Ronnie sleeping at the start again and is once more tailed off
Heat 11: Zagar, Peter (TR), Christian, Barker, 3-5, 42-29.
Peter is given the black and white helmet but can’t compete with the fast starting Zagar. Barker falls on bend 4 of lap 1 when challenging Christian, and remounts.
Heat 12: Lemon, McGowan, Lawson, Magnus, 62.30, 5-1, 47-30
Magnus replaces the out of sorts Ronnie.
Decent start from Magnus but the Reading pair pass him around the first 2 bends. William passes him on the back straight of lap 1 and Magnus goes from 1st to last in the space of half a lap!
Heat 13: Zagar, Peter, Hancock, Freddie, 60.77, 4-2, 51-32.
Zagar makes the slightly faster gate, with the Wolves pair tucking in for 2nd and 3rd. Hancock is close to them and as the riders cross the finishing line for the first time a blanket could have covered them all. Freddie goes too wide on the first 2 bends of lap 2 and Hancock nips underneath. Freddie chases him but can’t regain 3rd. Excellent race.
Heat 14: Gjedde, Billy, Magnus, Barker, 61.35, 3-3,54-35.
Tight first bend from Billy and Gjedde but one of his trade mark swoops sees Gjedde emerge in the lead. Billy can’t catch him. Barker presses Magnus but can’t find a way past.
Heat 15: Zagar (B), Peter (Y), McGowan (R), Billy (G), 60.77, 4-2, 58-37.
Wolves win the toss and take the much faster gates 2 and 4.
Billy makes a fast start but drifts wide out of the 2nd bend and Zagar and Peter nip underneath him. Zagar is gone and there is no catching him. McGowan passes Billy on the inside on bend 2 of lap 3.
Weather: Excellent, dry and warm.
Track: Surprisingly for Reading, the track seemed well prepared, evenly watered with a fair covering of shale. It did get a bit bare on the inside as the night progressed but no blue line was evident.
Attendance: A very poor crowd – probably less than 1,000 – possibly not helped by the home defeat to Coventry 2 days earlier.
Wolves Performance: The Wolves fans that had made the visit were hoping for a battling performance even if the near impossible win couldn’t be achieved. What they got was a very poor display with no rider part from William Lawson and to a lesser extent Billy Hamill showing any fighting spirit. Some of them seemed almost resigned to the fact that any chance of qualifying for the play offs was gone and they were simply going through the motions. So much for Peter Adams motivational skills.Overall a very disappointing performance.
Entertainment: Our performance didn’t help on the entertainment front, but there were a couple of decent races. Gjedde , and, though it pains me to say it, Zagar were quite spectacular.
Referee: Frank Ebdon – good performance – kept the meeting moving and was quite generous to Wolves in the 2 major decisions of the night.
Man of the Match: Really only came down to a choice of 2.William Lawson – due to his constant battling and an excellent ride in heat 8 and Billy Hamill, but his 1st to last in heat 15 didn’t help.
William Lawson takes the honours.
