William Lawson 1 0 1* 2 + 1
Magnus Karlsson 0 1* 0 0 1 + 1
This was the big one. Wolves had to win to retain any hope of a playoff spot. Coventry needed just a point to qualify and put Wolves out. Peter Karlsson declared himself fit after a visit to a knee specialist in the afternoon. Coventry welcomed back Nicholls and Schlein from injury and had number eight Troy Batchelor deputising for the injured Risager.
The weather was good, the track looked OK and a big crowd packed inside Brandon. Scott Nicholls wins the toss and takes gates 2 and 4.
Heat 1 - Peter Karlsson ; Scott Nicholls ; Billy Janniro ; Ronnie Correy ; (3-3)(3-3)
No sign of the injury as PK sweeps to an easy win. Poor start from Nicholls.
Heat 2 - Martin Smolinski ; Troy Batchelor ; William Lawson ; Magnus Karlsson ; (5-1)(8-4)
Batchelor rides an aggressive first lap to cut across William who pushes him all the way. Magnus way behind.
Heat 3 - Billy Hamill ; Chris Harris ; Christian Hefenbrock ; Olly Allen(Fx) ; (2-4)(10-8)
Allen gets the first bend all wrong and goes down in a heap. He’s excluded. The rerun is a cracker as Billy defies a strong challenge from Harris to hang on for the win.
Heat 4 - Rory Schlein ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Magnus Karlsson ; Troy Batchelor ; (3-3)(13-11)
A poor start from Freddie who gets into 3rd ahead of Batchelor and stays with Magnus for a couple of laps. Magnus holds on for a good point.
Heat 5 - Peter Karlsson ; Olly Allen ; Chris Harris ; Ronnie Correy ; (3-3)(16-14)
A stunning, brave first bend from PK who comes across from gate 4 and just has the drop going into the first bend. Ronnie leads Chris Harris for a point but Allen is slow and in the way. Harris takes his chance on the 3rd lap and nips inside Ronnie for the point.
Heat 6 - Scott Nicholls ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Billy Janniro ; William Lawson ; (4-2)(20-16)
It’s a home 5-1 from the start as Janniro blocks off Freddie’s run to the first bend after he makes a poor start from gate 1. Nicholls pulls away for the win and Fred does well to cut inside Janniro on the 2nd lap to reduce the damage to a 2-4.
Heat 7 - Martin Smolinski ; Rory Schlein ; Billy Hamill ; Christian Hefenbrock ; (5-1)(25-17)
Billy makes a dreadful start and has too much to do to catch the home pairing. Smolinski looks really quick and the result is a huge blow to Wolves’ chances – 8 down and a weak looking heat 8 to come…
Heat 8 - Billy Janniro ; Ronnie Correy ; Troy Batchelor ; Magnus Karlsson ; (4-2)(29-19)
It’s yet another 5-1 to Coventry from the gate. It looks secure as they team ride but a terrific move from Ronnie splits them on the 3rd lap. A very aggressive move up the inside from the Rocket might just have saved our season.
Heat 9 - Chris Harris ; Fredrik Lindgren (Tactical Ride) ; William Lawson ; Olly Allen ; (3-5)(32-24)
Freddie is nominated as a tactical but can’t catch the fast starting Harris. Good ride from William in 3rd who takes advantage of a mistake from Allen on the first lap and holds on for a good point.
Heat 10 - Billy Hamill ; Scott Nicholls ; Billy Janniro ; Christian Hefenbrock ; (3-3)(35-27)
Billy finds the pace he showed in his first ride again. A good start and he has to work very hard to hold off Nicholls. The deficit stays at an agonising 8 points.
Heat 11 - Martin Smolinski ; Ronnie Correy ; Peter Karlsson ; Rory Schlein(R) ; (3-3)(38-30)
Smolinski quickly hits the front for another impressive win. PK is floundering in last place when Schlein’s bike stops, gifting him the point.
Heat 12 - Christian Hefenbrock ; Olly Allen ; Billy Hamill (Tactical Sub) ; Martin Smolinski(R) ; (2-5)(40-35)
Peter Adams chooses to roll the dice here, replacing Lawson with Hamill off 15 metres. It looks a forlorn hope but it’s the right decision for me – why not go down fighting? Hamill makes little impact at the back on a pretty slick track but fortunately Smolinski stops while poised to take the lead and at five points down we still have a slim chance. A rare win for Christian who is delighted.
Heat 13 - Peter Karlsson ; Scott Nicholls ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Rory Schlein(R) ; (2-4)(42-39)
PK makes another fine start and Freddie tries his best to join him. He charges inside both home riders on the 3rd bend, however Nicholls keeps the power on around the outside and just about emerges in front. It’s a valiant effort from Fred and the lead is reduced to just 3 points.
Heat 14 - Martin Smolinski ; Billy Hamill ; Chris Harris ; Magnus Karlsson ; (4-2)(46-41)
They think its all over… Smolinski borrows a bike from Harris and makes it go just as fast as his other, outpacing Billy for the win. Magnus is left in the heat (don’t understand why we didn’t use the faster William Lawson) – he holds 3rd in front of Harris for a lap or so before drifting wide and gifting the vital point to Harris. Very poor effort from Magnus.
Heat 15 - Chris Harris ; Scott Nicholls ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Peter Karlsson ; (5-1)(51-42)
It’s academic – a 5-1 to the home side who finish one point short of the bonus but wrap up 4th place in the table.

Comment/Summary:
Weather: Fine and dry.
Track: Smooth, fairly slick.
Attendance: Very good. Just shows the fans will turn out, even on a Tuesday night if the meeting is important enough. Home fans are more like Crane Flies than Bees. Quiet and essentially harmless but there are hundreds of the annoying little… wherever you look!
Wolves Performance: Beaten by a better team.
Entertainment: The crucial nature of the meeting kept the interest, but the large crowd watched in an eerie silence for much of the meeting with little on track to excite them. Special mention to Peter York - Nigel Pearson and Tony Millard are extremely annoying on Sky TV but still have a lot to learn from the master. York prattled on for hours without saying anything of interest. The man has done the same routine for 30 years and still gets employed! Amazing…
Referee: Dan Holt. Never heard of him. Still haven’t.
Man of the Match: Peter Karlsson for his commitment to the cause.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 A fine effort considering he was riding with a painful injury.
Ronnie Correy: 6 Tried hard and deserved more from his 2nd ride.
Christian Hefenbrock: 4 Showed nothing in his first three rides before taking advantage of a Smolinski engine failure to win his 4th.
Billy Hamill: 6 A mixed night. Two excellent wins but struggled at vital times in his other rides.
Fredrik Lindgren: 7 Quick and aggressive but lacked consistency at the starts.
William Lawson: 6 Another trademark battling performance from the gritty Scot.
Magnus Karlsson: 3 Another very poor effort.
Conclusion: In many ways this meeting summed up the way our season went. We started with some hope only to fall behind early on. There was still the chance of a comeback, we got ourselves into a promising position then fell well short at the end. Sound familiar? Coventry had the match winner in Martin Smolinski and have defied their injury problems to come from nowhere to grab that final playoff spot. In contrast Wolves encountered very few injury problems throughout the season and couldn’t raise their performance level when it was most needed. To add further embarrassment, CVS and Peter Karlsson both claimed after the meeting that Wolves were robbed of a certain victory by a tactical “rain off” of the original B meeting on August 18th. Putting aside for one moment the small matter of torrential rain which flooded the track on that date – what exactly are we claiming here? We know we can’t beat Coventry’s full team but we were robbed of a chance to beat them when they had half a team. Has it really come to that?
