Wolves v Ipswich v Eastbourne
Craven Shield Leg 1 – 25th Sept 2006
WOLVES 33
1 SIMON STEAD (G) 3-2-3-1* 9+1
2 RONNIE CORREY 2*-1*-1-2 6+2
3 CHRISTIAN HEFENBROCK 0-2-1-2* 5+1
4 BILLY HAMILL 2-0-0-3 5
5 FREDDIE LINDGREN 0-2-3-2 7
6 WILLIAM LAWSON 1-0-0-E 1
EASTBOURNE 38
1 Adam Shields 1-0-3-1 5
2 Dean Barker 0-1-2*-0 3+1
3 Nicki Pedersen 3-3-3-3 12
4 Lewis Bridger 0-1-2*-1 4+1
5 David Norris 2*-2-0-3 7+1
6 Edward Kennett 3-0-2-2* 7+1
IPSWICH 37
1 David Howe (G) 1-F-1-F 2
2 Adam Skornicki (G) 3-3-F-2 8
3 Robert Miskowiak - 1*-3-E-3 7+1
4 Kim Jansson 2-1-1-1 5
5 Mark Loram 2*-3-2-3 10+1
6 Daniel King 3-1-1*-0 5+1
So this was the fate of the teams that did not quite make it to the play offs but were also not right at the bottom of the league pile. There was an immediate and noticeable difference on turning up at the turnstiles where the queues of last week were nowhere to be seen. Many things had conspired to keep people away – amongst them were the play offs on Sky, Peter Karlsson’s absence through injury, the strange match format, dubious weather reports, and a sort of end of term malaise.
Wolves began well with a 5-1 in heat 1 but relinquished that lead within a few races and were then playing catch up with the other two teams for most of the evening.
DETAILS: (Wolves/Eastbourne/Ipswich)
Heat 1 Stead, Correy, Shields, Barker f 5-1-0
Simon Stead made an excellent gate and led the race but Shields lifted badly going into turn 1 and shocked Barker into sliding off. Shields then had to give best to Ronnie Correy who had a very fast line coming out of the bend to join Simon for the 5-1. Shields faded badly as the race progressed.
Heat 2 Pedersen, Jansson, Miskowiak, Bridger 5-4-3
Jansson switched from the outside line to come inside and lead up the back straight but Pedersen soon passed him for the win. It is so weird watching a race at the Green and having no Wolves involvement in it.
Heat 3 Skornicki, Hamill, Howe, Hefenbrock 7-4-7
Adam Skornicki led the procession from tapes to flag. No donuts though! Did you notice that this was a 4-2 to Ipswich scored by two guests who are owned by Wolves but currently riding for Oxford? How bizarre is that!
Heat 4 Kennett, Norris, Lawson, Lindgren 8-9-7
The Eastie pairing gated with Kennett in front. Freddie passed Norris up the back straight and then chased down Kennett but over-rode into the last bend and slid off, gifting the 5-1 to Eastbourne.
Heat 5 King, Loram, Barker, Shields 8-10-12
Great gate from Ipswich with King powering past Loram in the first lap. Then they all played follow-my-leader for three laps.
Heat 6 Skornicki, Stead, Correy, Howe 11-10-15
Howe gated well but came off in the first bend and missed out on the ensuing procession.
Heat 7 Pedersen, Lindgren, Bridger, Lawson 13-14-15
Pedersen set off with Freddie in hot pursuit. Bridger passed inside William at the start of the second lap.
Heat 8 Loram, Norris, King, Kennett 13-16-19
Loram and Norris battled for a lap or so until Loram took the lead and King passed Kennett during the first lap too.
Heat 9 Miskowiak, Hefenbrock, Jansson, Hamill ef 15-16-23
There was heavy rain before this heat and therefore a delay. Billy Hamill dropped a chain in the first bend and the other three spaced themselves out to avoid the spray.
Heat 10 Stead, Kennett, Correy, Norris 19-18-23
Norris jumped the first start and they were all brought back. In the rerun he had a bike problem at the end of lap one and could only watch the procession for the rest of the race.
Heat 11 Shields, Barker, Howe, Skornicki f 19-23-24
The Eastbourne pair gated but Adam Skornicki tried to squeeze between them up the back straight buy bailed out going into the third bend. It was hard to say if there had been contact or not but the race was allowed to continue by Ms Vardy.
Heat 12 Lindgren, Loram, King, Lawson 22-23-27
Freddie gated and was gone. William held third for a while but faltered and King took his chance to pass up the inside line.
Heat 13 Pedersen, Bridger, Hefenbrock, Hamill ef 23-28-27
Bridger made a mess of the first turn as Pedersen led with Hamill chasing hard. Billy then dropped another chain at the start of the third lap therefore giving another 5-1 gift to Eastbourne.
Heat 14 Norris, Kennett, Jansson, Miskowiak exc 23-33-28
Miskowiak set off out side Kennett but fell in the first turn. The ref decided that he fell unaided and he was excluded from the rerun – which was a procession (sorry about using the word procession repeatedly in this report but the Thesaurus cannot offer another suitable alternative expression that expresses the correct level of boredom at the unchanging situation between the racing participants).
Heat 15 Loram, Correy, Stead, King 26-33-31
Procession (sorry!)
Heat 16 Hamill, Hefenbrock, Shields, Barker 31-34-31
Guess! But it was made a bit more interesting because it was a Wolves 5-1 and Christian rode well to keep Shields behind him.
Heat 17 Pedersen, Skornicki, Bridger, Howe 31-38-33
David Howe pulled up in the first bend. Adam Skornicki passed Bridger for second place. Pedersen’s maximum gives the meeting to Eastbourne.
Heat 18 Miskowiak, Lindgren, Jansson, Lawson Exc 2M 33-38-37
William Lawson was excluded under the two minute rule when he had machinery problems in the pits entrance. I thought it was extremely lamentable that there seemed to be no movement or reaction in the Wolves pit area to try and get a replacement machine to him. On the terraces we could see he was in trouble……….
Miskowiak gated to lead and win. Freddie missed the start but passed Jansson round the outside of the first bend on the second lap.
Unfortunately there seemed very little enthusiasm from the riders or the crowd and this was summed up by the lack of assistance for William in the last race. The format does mean that every third race contains no home riders and the interest in those races inevitably wanes and the continuity of the meeting is badly compromised (in other words it gets boring). I would have enjoyed a couple of decent challenge meetings much more than the Craven Shield.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Warm and dry until the downpour around heat 9.
Track: A ‘one line’ track which offered little of the entertainment we have become used to in 2006. Possibly weather forecast related.
Attendance: Two thirds of the norm.
Wolves Performance: It seemed to be lacking in real commitment.
Entertainment: I did not feel that I had been suitably entertained.
Referee (Margaret Vardy): I don’t think she did much wrong.
Man of the Match: Freddie might have sneaked it if he had beaten Pedersen but as it is I award it to Simon Stead.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Simon Stead: 8 - Stuck to the task and replaced PK better than expected.
Ronnie Correy: 7 - Above average but nothing spectacular
Christian Hefenbrock: 6 – An improvement on his recent UK form
Billy Hamill: 6 – Let down by his machinery and should have beaten Adam Skornicki
Fredrik Lindgren: 7 – Won the race in which he gated but he needs to do it more often.
William Lawson: 3 – Seemed strangely out of his depth, his single point was a gift from Freddie. Let down by his team mates in heat 18.
I will be surprised if we are in contention by the time the third leg comes round on Saturday at Eastbourne. If we are, it will be because the team have decided to ride as a team and work for each other.
I am looking forward to the Under 18 Championship meeting at the Green next Monday as this is usually a cracker. The youngsters go all out for the points and we usually see some exciting racing.
