A good sized home crowd turned up to see if the Eagles could qualify for the Craven Shield Final. Approximately 14 Wolves fans and even less from Ipswich !!
The track was well prepared as usual for Eastbourne, but looked quite dry.
Gate positions are pre programmed and so there was no toss.
Heat 1: Shields, Kylmakorpi, Barker, Jansson. 57.0 E=4 I=2.
Shields gates with Kylmakorpi and Jansson tucked in behind. Barker forces past Jansson on the back straight of lap 2 for third.
Heat 2: Harris, Schlein, Kerr, Miskowiak (F,EX). 56.0 E= 0(4) I=3(5) W=3
Miskowiak and Harris gate and lead. Schlein passes Miskowiak along the back straight of lap1. Miskowiak falls as he enters bend 3 of lap 1 and is rightly excluded.
In the re run Harris gates and neither of the Wolves can catch him.
Heat 3: Peter, Pedersen, Ronnie, Woodward (F, Rem). 55.9 E= 2(6) I=0(5) W=4(7)
Peter gates and gives Pedersen a nudge as they enter the first bend – makes a change for Nicki to receive some of his own medicine. Pedersen drifts wide on the first bend but Ronnie can’t quite take the invitation gap. Ronnie presses Pedersen for 2 laps but can’t quite get past. Woodward falls on bend 4 of lap 1 when last and remounts.
Woohoo – we’re in front!!!!
Heat 4: Norris, Bridger, Loram, Wilkinson. 56.1 E=5(11) I=1(6) W= 0(7)
Loram goes through the tapes, and is reinstated from 15 metres. The referee also warns Norris for moving at the tapes – very strange to exclude one rider while warning another at the same time.
In the re run Norris and Bridger gate and are gone. Loram gets past Wilkinson on bend 1 of lap 3 but can’t catch the Eagles.
Heat 5: Kylmakorpi, Freddie, Clews, Jansson (F). 58.9 E=0(11) I=3(9) W=3(10)
Freddie makes a fast start but makes a complete hash of the first two bends, as Kylmakorpi and Jansson pass him. Jansson locks up on bend 4 of lap 1, but luckily everyone manages to miss him as he shoots across the track to fall on the centre green. Lucky 3-3 for the Wolves – Clews way at the back and doesn’t seem to have much Clew – sorry Clue!
Heat 6: Shields, Barker, Peter, Ronnie. 56.7 E=5(11) I=0(9) W=1(11)
Shields gates with the Wolves tucked in for 2nd and 3rd. Barker forces his way between the Wolves pair down the back straight of lap 1 in an excellent move. Peter and Barker are close down the home straight of lap 1 but Barker gets through on the inside as they enter the first bend of lap2.
Heat 7: Harris, Norris, Miskowiak, Bridger(F). 56.9 E=2(18) I=4(13) W=0(11)
Miskowiak and Bridger gate with Miskowiak taking Bridger wide at the first bend. Bridger blocks Norris’ wide swoop and Norris falls back to last. Harris passes Miskowiak into bend 3 of lap 1 and pulls away. Bridger falls on band 3 of the last lap and after pushing Miskowiak for the whole of the race Norris passes him along the home straight of the last lap to pinch 2nd.
Heat 8: Freddie, Loram, Wilkinson, Clews. 57.2 E=0(18) I=3(16) W=3(14)
Loram gates with Freddie 2nd and Clews 3rd. Wilkinson cuts under Clews on the first2 bends for 3rd place. Freddie passes Loram out of bend 4 of lap 1 and pulls away for an excellent win.
Heat 9: Pedersen, Schlein, Woodward, Kerr. 57.2 E=4(22) I=0(16) W=2(16)
Pedersen and Woodward gate and lead. Woodward rears out of bend 4 lap 2 and Schlein gets underneath him but Kerr isn’t close enough to capitalise.
Heat 10: Loram, Barker, Shields, Wilkinson. 57.9 E=3(25) I=3(19) W=0(16)
Shields and Barker gate. Loram chases and goes around Barker down the back straight of lap1. He then cuts back and drives under Shields out of bend 4 of lap 1. Wilkinson way last.
Heat 11: Peter, Jansson, Ronnie, Kylmakorpi. 58.0 E=0(25) I=2(21) W=4(20)
Ronnie touches the tapes and is penalised 15 metres.
In the re run Peter gates and closes down Jansson who is on gate1 to pull away. Kylmakorpi rides a strange race in 3rd – has he remembered that he is an Eastbourne asset and should be helping them? – and Ronnie gets past him on the outside on bend 4 of lap3.
Heat 12:Freddie, Norris, Bridger, Clews. 57.4 E= 3(28) I=0(21) W=3(23)
Freddie gates and is gone. Clews pushes Bridger for 2 laps before falling back and is way last at the end.
Heat 13: Pedersen, Harris, Woodward, Miskowiak. 56.9 E=4(32) I=2(23) W=0(23)
Pedersen and Woodward gate. Harris forces his way past Woodward out of bend 2 on lap4. Woodward makes a big blast around the outside of the last 2 bends but can’t quite catch Harris for 2nd.
Heat 14: Schlein, Loram, Wilkinson, Kerr (F,Rem). 57.0 E=0(32) I=3(26) W=3(26)
Wilkinson and Kerr tangle in the first 30 yards and both fall. All four are invited back for the re run – probably the correct decision.
The re run is decided from the gate, although Kerr makes a brave attempt to pass Wilkinson around the outside of bend 4 on lap 2 before drifting wide to fall.
Heat 15: Shields, Freddie, Barker, Clews. 57.2 E=4(36) I=0(6) W=2(28)
Shields and Barker gate. Freddie goes around Barker out of bend 4 on lap 1 but can’t catch Shields.
Heat 16: Pedersen, Kylmakorpi, Woodward, Jansson. 57.9 E=4(40) I=2(28) W=0(28)
Pedersen gates with Kylmakorpi and Jansson 2nd and 3rd. Jansson completes a nightmare evening for him by slipping back to last on bend 3 of lap1.
Heat 17: Miskowiak, Harris, Peter, Ronnie. 57.5 E=0(40) I=5(33) W=1(29)
Ipswich need a 5-1 to give themselves a slim chance of forcing a draw on aggregate.
Miskowiak and Harris gate with Peter being forced wide at the first bend. Peter can’t catch the Witches and they gain the 5-1 they need.
Heat 18: Kerr, Norris, Schlein, Bridger. 58.1 E=2(42) I=0(33) W=4(33)
Eastbourne need just a point to ensure victory on aggregate.
Schlein touches the tapes to help their cause and is penalised 15 metres.
In the re run Kerr get a flyer from lap 1 and it is surprising that the referee does not call them all back for a restart. Schlein gets past Bridger on bend 2 of lap 2 for 3rd. Norris doesn’t settle for the safe 2 points but pushes Kerr for the 4 laps, but Kerr rides an excellent line to keep him at bay.
Wolves restored a bit of pride; Eastbourne deserved the aggregate win but there were a lot of Ipswich riders who needed to look at their performances and ask themselves whether they gave of their best.
Weather: Pleasant Autumn evening.
Track: Well prepared as ever for Eastbourne but not quite as much dirt as usual. Most of the passing was due to mistakes by riders rather than trackcraft.
Attendance: Decent sized crowd – more people than for the KO Cup match and League B match against Wolves.
Wolves Performance: The heat leaders did all that could be expected of them. Kerr rode well without much reward but the others were poor.
Entertainment: Some good racing and a good proportion of mistakes by riders when they were in front at least made for some entertainment.
Referee: Chris Gay – No mistakes – got all the important decisions correct.
Man of the Match: Fredrik Lindgren
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 6 Good performance coming back from injury – nice nudge on Nicki in Heat 3!
Ronnie Correy: 3 Never really at the races despite passing Kylmakorpi from 15 metres
Rory Schlein: 5 Decent performance let down by tape touching in heat18.
Chris Kerr:6 Did all that could be expected of him – excellent win in heat 18.
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Excellent performance and could have been better had he not made Such a hash of his first ride.
Paul Clews: 1 Way off the pace and outclassed.
