Thanks for setting that up '8' - and for doing the updates last night in such fine fashion after the winter's break.
I'm not going to say a lot today because our new style of match reporting means that anyone who was at the meeting can contribute to this thread and give their impression of the evening - saying as much or as little as they desire.
It was good to go back to Owlerton after a lot of years. I was very impressed with the stadium and the general presentation. It was a shakedown meeting and some riders were obviously treating it as such and were trying out machinery configurations, or riding techniques. I felt that we should have been able to win the meeting by eight points or so and therefore was a little disappointed to lose by two.
Most impressive for Sheffield were Compton and Ashworth. Compton never looked like being headed and won several of his races by 30 or 40 metres. Ben Wilson got better during the meeting and closed his night off with two good wins following fast starts.
For Wolves Theo Pijper was most impressive rider. What a difference I hope he is going to make! Magnus also showed well - especially his gating - and Adam started the meeting in great form but faded as the lines changed on the track. David Howe and Freddie Lindgren both struggled to get their machines moving off the starts and Freddie also had a poor night with his machinery as he failed to complete two of his heats. Carl Wilkinson took a couple of races to get going but in his last two rides showed a lot of determination and the ability to try different lines to good effect. The unfortunate Nicolai Klindt had looked extremely enthusiastic and would have been good for about 6 or 7 points if he hadn't suffered an EF and then the serious looking fall in his last race. I haven't yet heard the extent of his injuries but he hit the fence (no air bags) very hard and was down on the track for a long while before they transferred him to the ambulance and eventually took him to the Northern general Hospital. Let's hope it's nothing serious and that he is back in action very soon. Good Luck Nicolai.
I thought the racing was quite good on a track that encourages (excuse the phrase) 'balls out' riding and some exciting spectacles. At first glance the bends seemed too narrow to allow more than one line but that proved not to be the case and we saw plenty of passing moves on the third, fourth and second turns.

then the serious looking fall in his last race. I haven't yet heard the extent of his injuries but he hit the fence (no air bags) Did'nt go so I cant comment on the match , but you have raised a very good point there Lawt about the air fence. Why dont they have air fences in the Premier League, dont they think riders go as fast so there is less chance of injury,it's been proven over the few years that the Elite League have had them that injuries have been cut down. Cost should not be an issue.

If they can do it why can't others

I think I read on the Brummies site that soon it will become mandatory to have them in the PL, and it will be cheapier because the BSPA will buy them in bulk. Still think any new track opening should automatically go for an airfence.

Around 20 grand for an air fence. Tracks such as Berwick with low crowds just couldnt afford this. I know cost should not come into the safety issue, but 20 thousand pounds is a lot of money! I believe Stokes air fence was financed by sponsors, so perhaps thats a road worth looking at, but sponsors are also hard to find!

Do they have air fences in other countries? If all tracks in this country were supposed to to have them, then they should in other countries. Cos if a rider rides here and hits the air bag and gets up and 2 days later he rides in poland or sweden and crashes into a hard fence and is badly injured then he may of well of hit a hard fence in this country. Maybe the FIM should make it mandatory across europe to have air fences. Use the sponsors of the GP to fund them, cos if all the top riders got hurt at tracks that dont have them then I should think the GP will be pretty awful without world class riders...IMO
