Lost 43-50. PK's turn to have an off night. They just can't all get it together at once, very frustrating.

The coach breaking down in 1985 and fans drawing lots for the empty seats on the 2nd coach (we took 2 coaches everywhere in those days). Then Ego drove the replacement coach to KL breaking the speed record to get there for heat 3. Who drew a seat on the 2nd coach and promptly gave it away and for what reason ?

Finding out where Ego went with the coach after he'd dropped everyone off. Sam's ultimate team riding with Stekkers, pointing where he wanted Jan to ride. That's pretty good for one away track. Any more? Yes................Where did he go with the coach ? Sam and Stekkers team riding was some of the best animated hand signals seen in speedway for a long time. Remember Shane Cooper practicing after one match at Kings Lynn and coming of his bike on the 3rd/4th turn and Lupus spending half the night with him in hosp.

Sam and Stekkers was definitely the highlight for me.
The last heat of the night in that same match was also a classic as Sam and Ronnie tried to hold out Richard Knight - some of the lines Sam rode to try and block Knight out to get Ronnie through were untrue.
Going back even further to the 1970s which Wolves fan who regularly posts on here - along with 3 others - had to walk back from King's Lynn after the coach driver refused to wait for them to finish their pints of beer..........
I'll let him own up to that classic ;D ;D

First visit to KL was 73. we lost, (45-33?) but stayed for the second half. The final saw Terry Betts, Ole and Tom Leadbitter. The fourth rider I can't remember but it was the stars' second heat leader. Bizarrely, Tom shot out the gate and won the scratch race final.
Third visit was for the Golden Helmet race off (best of three) when Phil Crump was on the first 4 valve engine. first time I saw Olsen use elbows and ride aggressively to win. Which he did.

I think that it was Will Oliver who gave up his seat to stay with his brother Dave. That's real brotherly love for you. There was a lot riding on that ballot as a number of us were going for our 100% that year (seeing every match). There was no guarantee that second coach would ever get there - they were the only two heats I missed that year. Of course we reckoned without our demon driver. I forget where he used to go with the coach, but I think it had something to do with Meryl Streep.

OK!
I thought King's Lynn was the best track I had ever seen. i saw Michael Lee perform minor miracles on that track, but at Monmore he was easily beaten by Steve Lomas (the human cabbage as he was termed by me and a few mates) which, for me, meant he wasn't very top drawer. Before I did my degree and drifted away from speedway I did go to King's Lynn in the late 80s, Bobby Schwartz at number 1. We lost, 41-37 I think. Preben excluded for sticking someone in the back straight fence. harsh I thought, but by then he had a certain reputation.
Going back to the Golden Helmet match race decider in 75 my recollection is as follows. Heat 1: Crump gated and won by 20 or so yards. Olsen's invincibility (the only plus to being a Wolves fan in the early 70s) was under serious threat. In the second race Ole outgated from the inside and Crump pulled up within the first lap. The consensus was that he was keeping his powder dry and fancied his chances on a bike that was obvously faster.
The third and deciding heat saw Olsen just get his front wheel in front at the first turn but then, instead of just pulling away, (the only experience I had ever witnessed) he had to block and thwart a rider who was clearly on faster machinery.
Olsen won, we celebrated, but this was a watershed moment where the technology moved the sport on.
Later that season I watched Ole achieve a 15 point maximum in the World final at Wembley.
