Jason Doyle scored a superb 15+2 from reserve to fire the Swindon Robins to a brilliant 42-48 win away at the injury ravaged Wolverhampton Wolves.
The high-flying Robins got off to the better start, as good wins for Hans Andersen and Jason Doyle in heats 1 and 2 respectively led to heat advantages which moved Swindon ahead by 4.
A spell of four level races followed, with the pick of those coming as guesting Chris Harris dived between Swindon duo Troy Batchelor and Jason Doyle to take the win. In the 7th race of the night, Wolves moved themselves level though, after reserve Ricky Wells and Robert Miskowiak raced from Peter Kildemand and Nick Morris to give their side a 5-1.
The home side were not level for long though, as Simon Stead and Jason Doyle held on well under pressure from Wells next time out to give Swindon a maximum of their own and restore their four point lead.
Heat ten then saw Wolves draw level once more in bizarre circumstances. Swindon pairing Doyle and Kildemand raced from the gate on a 5-1, before Chris Harris slipped past Kildemand into second. Then, on turn one of the third lap, Kildemand slid to the deck, with his bike impeding team-mate Doyle and allowing both Harris and Wells to race through for a Wolves 5-1.
The hosts made it two consecutive 5-1s next time out to take the lead for the first time in the meeting in an absolutely stunning heat of speedway. Swindon duo Andersen and Stead made the gate, before Proctor worked his way into second on lap two before setting his sights on Andersen at the front. Meanwhile, Wells was fighting his way past Stead into third, and after Proctor dived inside Andersen to take the lead going onto the third lap, Wells repeated the trick with a brilliant turn two cutback to give Wolves the maximum.
With only four heats remaining, Wolves looked to have the upper hand with a four point lead, but Swindon instantly tried to change that with a heat 12 maximum from Kildemand and Doyle, before Hans Andersen got the better of Harris for the second time to put Swindon ahead again with a heat 13 4-2.
The meeting lay well and truly in the balance going into the closing stages, but Swindon struck, as Doyle and Nick Morris made the most of a mistake from Ricky Wells to pounce into the lead and give the visiting side a penultimate race 5-1 which wrapped up the win.
The Robins were still in search of a heat advantage in the final race of an enthralling meeting to give them maximum points, but Wolves guest Chris Harris raced away for the win, with the result being a 3-3 after Hans Andersen aggressively blocked off Robert Miskowiak on the final bend to allow Jason Doyle to nip into second from the back.
Wolves had their efforts led by guest Chris Harris (16) who did a brilliant job in place of injured Fredrik Lindgren. Reserve Ricky Wells 10+2 also continued his great form to support well, although he did fade in the closing stages, whilst Pole Robert Miskowiak (9+2) was very strong. Stand-in skipper Ty Proctor (7+1) had a decent night as well, but in the end Wolves were carrying too many passengers, as both Pontus Aspgren and Matthew Wethers, guesting in place of Ricky Wells at reserve, failed to score. In the end, Wolves just had too many last places, with 10 out of the 15 races having a home rider trailing at the back, and that enabled the away side to take the win.
Swindon put in a very well rounded display to earn their win, in which every rider carried out their roles to a reasonable level. Reserve Jason Doyle (15+2) was a real trump card as he put in an excellent display, whilst number one Hans Andersen (11+1) looked quick all night as he banged in another great score. In the middle order, Peter Kildemand (7) and Troy Batchelor (7) were both valuable to the effort, whilst Robin Aspegren (3+2) did his job at number 6. Simon Stead (3+1) was a little below par but did add some decent points, whilst Nick Morris (2+1) played a massive part in the winning 5-1 in heat 14 despite being poor in his other rides.
RIDER RATINGS (/5)
Wolves
Chris Harris:- Did exactly what Freddie would have if not more. A great guest, gave it 110% as he does whenever he gets on a bike and some brilliant overtaking, particularly his dive between Batchelor and Doyle in heat 4. 4.5
Pontus Aspgren:- Well and truly off the pace. Struggled since that engine blew at Cov shortly after Birmingham meeting. Position must be under consideration but I would like to see him get a few meetings at reserve first. 0
Robert Miskowiak:- Looking a good replacement for Klindt. A solid scorer, not spectacular but a strong return nonetheless. 3.5
Ty Proctor:- About average for Ty. Stunning ride in heat 11. Slow of the start and that cost him, he said after meeting that he had problems with sprocket and it wasn't getting him off the gate well enough. 3
Tai Woffinden R/R:- Did a better job than it has done but we are still missing Tai big time.
Ricky Wells:- Not as dominant as he has been, but Doyle was a tough man to beat. Still a very good performance, but he did fade a little late on. 3.5
Matthew Wethers:- Off the pace. 0
Swindon
Hans Andersen:- Looked very quick, and the only man to beat Harris. I had no complaints about heat 15, that is just speedway, was a hard move and I think he thought it would give his team an extra point. 4.5
Simon Stead:- Deserved more points, but looked quite slow and got overtaken a lot. 1
Peter Kildemand:- Looked pretty fast, although his fall in heat 10 which took out Doyle was nearly very costly. 3
Nick Morris:- Slow and outpaced until a great last ride to hold off Wells. Rosco said to me after meeting he has just identified his problem and he will be a lot better from now on. 1.5
Troy Batchelor:- Solid but unspectacular. Never looked like winning a race but scored in every heat. 3
Robin Aspegren:- Did his job very well, and unlucky Doyle was on fire, so he didn't get his 4th ride. 2.5
Jason Doyle:- Brilliant at reserve and really stepped up to the plate since Kildemand has moved to the main body. Very fast and could have had more point had he not been impeded in heat 10. 4.5 MOTM
