The Belle Vue Aces finally scored their first points of the Elite League campaign as they comfortably defeated fellow struggler’s the Wolverhampton Wolves 54-40 at Kirky Lane in a result that they will be hoping will kick-start their season.
Belle Vue got off to a dream start, as returning Rory Schlein and new boy Craig Cook kept their composure to hold on from opposing number one Fredrik Lindgren for a huge 5-1.
In-form reserve Ricky Wells then raced to a heat 2 victory for the visiting Wolves in heat 2, with Ales Dryml and Renat Gafurov in second and third respectively to make it a 3-3 and maintain the Belle Vue lead.
Another level race followed thanks to a comfortable win for Pole Artur Mroczka, before Gafurov led the way in a comfortable 5-1 with Charlie Gjedde in heat 4 over Robert Miskowiak which doubled the hosts lead to 8 points.
Cook then bagged his second triumph over Lindgren in heat 5 to instigate another Aces heat advantage, before Renat Gafurov and Rory Schlein took the chequered flag in heat 6 for third Aces maximum to complete their dream start.
However, with a 14 point deficit, Wolves put number one Fredrik Lindgren on a tactical ride in the hope of getting back into the meeting. Yet Belle Vue number five Charlie Gjedde kept his cool to get the better of Lindgren, with Ales Dryml just prevailing in a great battle with Ty Proctor at the back to ensure that the 14 point deficit remained unchanged by a 4-4.
Wolves were in desperate need of action – fast – and they set about plugging away the gap with their first heat advantage of the night thanks to a Ricky Wells victory over Artur Mroczka, with Pontus Aspgren taking advantage of a Renat Gafurov fall at the back to take third.
It was make or break time for the visitors next time out, as Ricky Wells took the second Wolves tactical ride on the back of his win, but Belle Vue again nullified the threat, this time an Artur Mroczka win securing a 4-4 once more.
Wolves did then take another heat advantage next time out, as Miskowiak recovered from two last places to take a win, with a Rory Schlein engine failure ensuring Proctor took 3rd for a 4-2 which narrowed the gap to 10.
Any slim chances of a Wolves fight back were soon wiped out though, as Ales Dryml and Charlie Gjedde scored a fourth Aces maximum over Fredrik Lindgren to restore the 14 point home lead.
Heat 12 saw Renat Gafurov add his third win on his debut for a 3-3, before Wolves finally made a gate in heat 13, only to see the race rerun with the exclusion of Charlie Gjedde after the Belle Vue man hit the deck hard in his pursuit of Lindgren and Miskowiak. In the rerun, Miskowiak again took the win ahead of Schlein, with the result being a 4-2 to narrow the gulf slightly to 12, but it was little consolation.
In the penultimate race of the night, struggling Wolves reserve Lukasz Sowka got out of shape coming out of turn two and slid into the air fence, before Craig Cook instigated a 4-2 in the rerun.
Going into the final heat, Belle Vue were assured of their first Elite League points with an easy win, but Wolves reserve Ricky Wells completed a good night for him personally with a superb heat 15 victory to leave the final scoreline as Belle Vue 54-40 Wolves.
RIDER RATINGS (/5)
Wolverhampton Wolves
Fredrik Lindgren: Looked slow, didn't gate well so didn't score well on a slick track. Needs to up his game with Wolves as he is under-performing at present. 2
Pontus Aspgren: Looking well off the pace at the moment, needs to get his act together quickly if he is going to keep his place. 0
R/R: Again scored quite well, but we do need Woffinden back badly.
Ty Proctor: Solid scorer, but threw away a few points from scoring positions. Not great but not the main culprit in tonight's defeat. 3
Robert Miskowiak: 2 great wins, but awful in the rest. Very inconsistent, and I think the return of Klindt will strengthen us a little as I think he is slightly better than Miskowiak. 3
Ricky Wells: Again was superb, our main source of resistance, he is the one rider who can hold his head high after performing better than expected. 4
Lukasz Sowka: Well off the pace, time must be nearly up for him unfortunately. 0
Belle Vue Aces
Rory Schlein: Quick on return, would have had more points if not for engine failure. 4
Craig Cook: Two great wins over Lindgren and a superb return. 4
Artur Mroczka: Strong display, looked pretty quick. 4
Charlie Gjedde: On a max until his fall when he was just pushing a little too hard. Had to go IMO, Freddie had the line and he tried to block it with his leg. 4.5
Ales Dryml: Picked up vital points at the back and good second place. 3.5
Renat Gafurov: Top scored, three superb wins and will be a crucial signing at reserve for Aces. 4.5
