Coventry City FC have agreed a deal to buy Brandon and build a new football stadium. So is this the end of one of the longest running speedway tracks in the world? A sad loss to the sport if that's what happens and a further reduction to the number of Elite teams

A sad loss to the sport if that's what happens and a further reduction to the number of Elite teams Worrying news - however there is a statement on the official Coventry site saying that a lease exists for speedway, greyhounds and stock cars at the stadium until 2023 and they expect this to be upheld. I guess the owners may have a choice to make soon. Do they want to uphold that lease and preserve speedway and greyhounds. Or surrender the lease and have a few million pounds in their bank account. Its a decision that a fee owners of greyhound and speedway stadiums have had to make over the years

I can't help but think this is only symptomatic of what has been happening (and is) to speedway in this country. The TV pictures from Brandon earlier in the season when we almost scored 60 told their own tale. Brandon is a huge site and whatever the lease is, crowds measured in hundreds will not sustain it. I can remember being in a crowd of over 10,000 on many occasions at Coventry but those days are long gone. If SKY do pull out at the end of this season, and given some of the rent-a -team meetings seen I would not be surprised, then the BSPA have got huge problems. If clubs are losing money with SKY, what are the prospects for speedway in 2014?
I just don't believe the numbers add up any more.

BBC reporting today: Coventry City have revealed that they hope to finalise a deal to build a new permanent home "within six miles of the city centre" in weeks.
Brandon is 6 miles from the City Centre. I do think Speedway people should be campaigning that if Brandon were took over then the Speedway and Greyhounds sports should be protected, or a new home be provided, as a condition. But I suspect the owners are more focused on the potential financial windfall

I can't see Coventry City getting planning permission to build at Brandon. The access to the stadium is pretty awful, with only one road into the area. Its quite a smart area of the city, so I'd be surprised if the residents round there will be happy about the football being there in the future.

Coventry City Football Club want to build a NEW stadium at Brandon despite having moved into a new stadium in 2005 and recieving £10 million from Japanese sponsors, Ricoh in a deal that runs out in 2017 !!!
Having not been able to meet the agreement of that deal, they also couldn't run the stadium or club and went into administration and had to move out. They now enter the 2013/14 season in Northampton (which they are renting) as they are quite frankly potless and struggling to even survive.
Despite this, they are looking at BUYING the land, BUILD a new stadium costing £30 million and buy out the lease that is running for other sports at Brandon, one of which is of course Coventry Bees Speedway who have been there since 1928.
So the Ricoh Arena sits empty but the Leisure Center, Casino, Tesco's and the Shopping Center stay open and the owners were only wanting £1.2 million rent a season. ..... If Coventry City FC can't afford that .... how do they afford to see their plans for Brandon materialise ?
32,609 seater stadium
