Wolves win 97-95 on aggregate.
What a meeting! A good track, some fantastic racing, a big crowd, an all-round team performance from the Wolves, and the all-important bonus point! Freddie, Ronnie, David and guest Greg all produced flashes of brilliance, while Krys was desperately unlucky with falls and machine trouble. Poole relied too heavily on Lindback, Pedersen and the impressive Kennett for their points, with Ryan “Pants” Sullivan turning in one of his worst displays in Britain.
Wolves won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Lindgren, Pedersen, Ferjan, Pecyna (fell), 57.48. 3-3, 3-3.
Freddie was fourth coming out of turn two as Krys led, with Freddie blasting around an early outside line to take third before setting off after Pedersen, taking second with a lap and a half to go (oops!). An unlikely 5-1 looked on the cards, but Krys slipped and fell at turn two to hand Freddie the win ending an excellent opener.
Heat 2: Kennett, Karlsson, Correy, Suchanek, 58.29. 3-3, 6-6.
Poole made the start but the Wolves went either side of Suchanek at turn two. Kennet was aready away and clear.
Heat 3: Lindback, Howe, Sullivan, Johnston, 57.70. 2-4, 8-10.
Johno brought out the Flymo again and couldn’t catch Mr Pants, while David chased Toninho all the way but the Brazilian was clear.
Heat 4: Hancock, Kennett, Correy, Kasprzak, 58.24. 4-2, 12-12.
Greg led all the way to rather forced applause from the Wolves fans, while Ronnie used the inside line well to pressure Kennett – only problem was, all the grip was on the outside. Kasprzak proved his status as a “GAPO” rider, doing nothing when he doesn’t make the start.
Heat 5: Howe, Ferjan, Pedersen, Johnston, 57.15. 3-3, 15-15.
Ferjan bashed Johno and Pedersen wide on turn one but the race continued, with David leading all the way.
Heat 6: Lindgren, Kasprzak, Suchanek, Pecyna (ret), 57.09. 3-3, 18-18.
Kasprzak gated but Freddie went inside him at turn two, while Krys suffered an engine failure at the same moment, and the scores remained level.
Heat 7: Karlsson, Hancock, Lindback, Sullivan, 58.40. 5-1, 23-19.
Mr Pants sent Greg and Toninho wide on turn one, but again the race continued. Magnus held the lead as Greg took the wide line and rounded Mr Pants for second, with the Aussie slipping to the back.
Heat 8: Correy, Kennett, Ferjan, Pecyna, 57.72. 3-3, 26-22.
Poole once again made the start, but a brilliant piece of riding by Ronnie took him between them at turn two for the lead! Krys missed the start and couldn’t make up ground.
Heat 9: Johnston, Howe, Kasprzak, Suchanek, 58.36. 5-1, 31-23.
Johno went from fourth to first on the first lap (yes, the same Johno as in his first two rides!) with David taking the inside line on Kasprzak for second. Kasprzak struck back but David blocked him nicely on the last turn to put the Wolves within touching distance of the aggregate lead. Why isn’t Johno’s first programmed ride in heat 9?
Heat 10: Lindback, Lindgren, Correy, Sullivan, 57.54. 3-3, 34-26.
Toninho led at the first turn with Mr Pants following until slipping wide and allowing the Wolves through. Apparently Mr Pants later walked out of the meeting, saying that he was ill and couldn’t see. And the Aussies say us Poms are whingers?!
Heat 11: Hancock, Pedersen, Karlsson, Ferjan, 57.23. 4-2, 38-28.
Greg took Ferjan wide on the first turn allowing Magnus into third, with Greg then holding off Pedersen for the win and putting the Wolves a point ahead on aggregate.
Heat 12: Correy, Johnston, Lindback (tac. sub.), Kennett, 58.23. 5-2, 43-30.
The decision to nominate Toninho off 15 metres seemed strange when Mr Pants from the gate may well have netted more points – perhaps Toninho’s biggest fans at Sky had a say in the matter? In the race Johno took Kennett wide and the Wolves were away for a 5-2. Could we get the bonus?
Heat 13: Pedersen (double), Lindgren, Hancock, Kasprzak, 57.62. 3-6, 46-36.
Pedersen was nominated for the double and led all the way, while Kasprzak went wide on the second bend and both Wolves went under him.
Heat 14: Howe, Kennett (double), Lindback, Karlsson, 57.50. 3-5, 49-41.
With the win on the night decided, the Pirates resorted to desperate measures to try and rescue the bonus point – and they nearly worked. The Wolves held a 5-1 for a lap until the black and white-helmeted Kennet rounded Magnus, who held third until Toninho sent him wide on the last turn.
Heat 15: Hancock, Lindgren, Pedersen, Lindback, 58.05. 5-1, 54-42.
Wolves needed a 4-2 to secure the bonus point, and it looked like a tall order. However, Greg led all the way while Freddie went inside Pedersen for second, holding him off to the line to take all three points to Monmore.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** Perfect.
Track conditions: ****.5 Much better than usual, but slickened very slightly.
Attendance: ***** A very good crowd for a Bank Holiday.
Wolves’ performance: ***** Fabulous.
Entertainment value: ***** Some superb racing all the way through.
Man of the Match: It could be any one of five, but for his great passing moves it goes to Fredrik Lindgren.
Referee (Graham Reeve): **** Could have called back one or two heats for first bend bunching.
Rider ratings:
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Gave 100% in every race.
Krzysztof Pecyna: ** No luck all night.
Steve Johnston: ** Took until halfway through to wake up.
David Howe: **** Fastest gater of the night.
Greg Hancock: *** Could have had more, but old rivalries are never forgotten - once a Spoon, always a Spoon
Magnus Karlsson: *** Great win in heat 7.
Ronnie Correy: **** Some fantastic moves, but beaten by Kennett.
A busy schedule of away matches follows (Oxford on Thursday, Coventry Friday and Ipswich Saturday), so this win will no doubt have fired the Wolves up for them. Let’s hope that the action comes thick and fast (there I go again!) and that incidents are kept to a minimum.
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
