The under-15 stars of the future had their second Monmore outing of the year after the Wolves’ win over Poole (so a long night was in prospect!). Lewis Bridger had planned to arrive at Monmore by helicopter after racing at Weymouth in the afternoon, but delays meant that he did not appear. The other youngsters on show put on some decent action, with regular Wolves second-halfer Joe Reynolds and Rhinos number one Shane Waldron probably the pick of the bunch. All the riders gave maximum effort and provided some good entertainment, with a high number of falls as they tried to get used to the tight track.
Heat 1 (awarded): Reynolds, Hannon, Johnson (f.exc), Waldron (f.exc). 3-2, 3-2.
Waldron led heat one with Reynolds chasing, before going under Waldron and fetching him off starting lap two. Strangely Waldron was excluded, and the rerun saw the Buffaloes hold a 5-1 until Brendan Johnson spun off at turn three, with Ben Hannon – a late replacement for Dan Kirkman - laying it down only to pile into Johnson for another stoppage. The race was awarded, and many spectators retreated to the bar.
Heat 2 (awarded): Greenwood, Johnson, Webster (f.exc), Piper (exc, 2 mins). 2-3, 5-5.
George Piper’s engine died before the start – perhaps it ran out of fuel waiting for Johnson to appear from the pits! – and he was excluded. Tim Webster led but fell starting lap two and 12-year old Daniel Greenwood – surely the smallest rider to appear at Monmore since Ronnie Correy – laid down but piled into Webster, with the race stopped and awarded. Webster received some treatment but was able to continue in the meeting.
Heat 3: Waldron, Reynolds, Piper, Hannon (ret), 64.20. 3-3, 8-8.
Hannon was slow away and his bike eventually died ending his meeting, while Waldron led all the way. Reynolds clipped his team-mate and almost came off, but four laps were completed.
Heat 4: Greenwood, Johnson, Franklin, Charles, 71.27. 2-4, 10-12.
The second strings’ race saw Greenwood win in a time some seven seconds slower than the previous heat, with Johnson second despite a big lock-up on lap one. A smoky Richard Franklin just held off Bob Charles (not of golf fame) for third.
Heat 5: Reynolds, Webster, Piper, Greenwood, 64.12. 4-2, 14-14.
Reynolds (in as rider replacement for himself!) led all the way, with Webster holding onto second despite a couple of slips.
Heat 6: Waldron, Reynolds, Piper, Webster (f.rem), 64.18. 3-3, 17-17.
Waldron held off Reynolds for another win, while Webster fell and remounted on the second lap.
Heat 7: Johnson, Greenwood, Franklin, Charles (fell), 69.73. 3-3, 20-20.
Greenwood took Charles for second on the first lap, before Charles did a 360 a lap later and stepped off, spinning round again once he had left the bike before staggering to the centre!
Heat 8 (re-run): Reynolds, Waldron (f.rem), Webster (fell), Piper (f.exc), 64.64. 3-2, 23-22.
The Buffaloes chased Waldron for the early lead until Piper spun off, with Webster laying it down only to slide into Piper once again. Piper was excluded and the rerun saw Reynolds clip Webster on the first turn, the Rhino falling and remounting as Reynolds went inside Waldron on the back straight for the lead. Waldron then pushed that little bit too hard and came down, with Webster spinning off in avoidance and leaving the track. Waldron remounted but Reynolds, cheered on by his very loud and enthusiastic fans, took the win and sealed the match in favour of the Buffaloes.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** Hardly cooler than the start of the evening.
Track conditions: **** Not graded during the meeting, but stood up well.
Attendance: *** Many spectators stayed behind, although the majority were in the bar.
Entertainment value: **** Very enjoyable, with plenty of thrills and spills.
Man of the Match: It has to go to Joe Reynolds as he looked the steadiest throughout.
Referee (Graham Reeve): ** Got the heat one decision wrong.
Rider ratings:
Joe Reynolds: **** Showed great pace and passing ability.
George Piper: *** Looked uncomfortable with the track.
Brendan Johnson: *** Learned as the night went on.
Bob Charles: ** Struggled slightly.
Shane Waldron: **** Looked very quick when he lasted.
Ben Hannon: ** Let down by his machine.
Tim Webster: **** Maximum effort.
