Sorry for the slight delay!
WOLVES 58 SWINDON 36, CRAVEN SHIELD, MONDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER
Parry’s International Wolves:
Adam Skornicki 2* 2 3 F 0 =7+1
Magnus Karlsson 3 1* 3 0 =7+1
Steve Johnston 1 1* 3 3 =8+1
Fredrik Lindgren 3 2 2* 3 =10+1
David Howe 3 3 1* 3 1 =11+1
Ronnie Correy 3 2* 2 2* =9+2
James Grieves 1 1 2* 2* =6+2
Pebley Beach Robins:
Leigh Adams 1 3 6^ 2 3 =15
Jonas Davidsson 0 0 0 0 =0
Kauko Nieminen 0 0 2 1 1 =4
Charlie Gjedde R/R (2) (1) (1*) (1) =(5+1)
Lee Richardson 2 3 2^ 1* 1* 2* =11+3
Ulrich Ostergaard 2 2 0 1 0 0 =5
Mads Korneliussen 0 0 1 0 =1
A two-man Swindon team was no match for a resurgent Wolves squad, who got their Craven Shield campaign off to the best possible start. Guest Adam Skornicki was given a hero’s welcome on his return to Monmore, and performed admirably – as did all the Wolves in an excellent all-round performance. Swindon, by contrast, arrived with three Premier League riders – causing a terrace debate on how to spell Kauko Nieminen’s name -, and with Jonas Davidsson looking well out of form (or perhaps he was saving himself to face Freddie in the World Under-21 final this Saturday?) the win was a fairly easy one.
After the two Australian captains declared the light to be satisfactory, Swindon won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Karlsson, Skornicki, Adams, Davidsson, 58.96. 5-1, 5-1.
Adams took the lead but locked up on turn two allowing Wolves’ opening pair through for an unlikely 5-1. Perhaps Adams found it too dark after all?
Heat 2: Correy, Ostergaard, Grieves, Korneliussen, 59.82. 4-2, 9-3.
Ronnie held the inside at turn one to take Ostergaard for the lead, while James held off Korneliussen for a point on his Monmore return.
Heat 3: Lindgren, Ostergaard, Johnston, Nieminen, 58.97. 4-2, 13-5.
Freddie went inside Ostergaard to lead, while Johno’s usual inept start culminated in a failed last-bend challenge on the Premier League man.
Heat 4: Howe, Richardson, Grieves, Korneliussen, 58.90. 4-2, 17-7.
As expected, Richardson took the lead, but David flew down the inside of him on the back straight for a fine win.
Heat 5: Adams, Lindgren, Johnston, Davidsson, 57-70. 3-3, 20-10.
From the gate - did anyone expect a result other than this?
Heat 6: Richardson, Skornicki, Karlsson, Ostergaard, 59.29. 3-3, 23-13.
Richardson and Adam held station at the front, while Magnus took third on the first lap.
Heat 7: Howe, Correy, Ostergaard, Nieminen, 57.50. 5-1, 28-14.
From the gate, with the 5-1 extending the Wolves’ advantage to 14 points.
Heat 8 (re-run): Karlsson, Grieves, Korneliussen, Davidsson, 58.11. 5-1, 33-15.
Ostergaard jumped the start, but did not hit the tapes and was allowed in the re-run. This saw the Wolves lead all the way once again.
Heat 9: Johnston, Lindgren, Richardson (double), Ostergaard, 58.55. 5-2, 38-17.
At last Swindon produced the black and white helmet for Richardson, but it had little effect as Wolves led all the way for a third successive maximum score.
Heat 10: Skornicki, Nieminen, Richardson, Karlsson, 58.77. 3-3, 41-20.
This was by far the race of the night. Nieminen surprised many by rounding the pack on turn two to lead, with Richardson almost passing Adam for third. Richardson then went through to second with Magnus slipping to the back, but entering the last lap Adam produced a truly amazing burst around the outside to shoot straight into the lead and take the win in one of his best ever rides at Monmore. The donuts have never been so sweet!
Heat 11: Adams (double), Correy, Howe, Davidsson, 58.02. 44-26.
Adams hit a six to make a small inroad into the Wolves lead, but the result was hardly in doubt by now. Davidsson completed his duck at the back.
Heat 12: Johnston, Grieves, Nieminen, Ostergaard, 59.23. 5-1, 49-27.
Ostergaard gated, but was fourth by turn two as the Wolves raced to yet another 5-1
Heat 13: Howe, Adams, Richardson, Skornicki (fell), 57.87. 3-3, 52-30.
Wolves made the start, but Adams soon powered his way to the front. Starting lap four Richardson dove under Adam into turn one, and the Pole hit the deck, although it was hard to see if there was any contact.
Heat 14: Lindgren, Correy, Nieminen, Korneliussen, 58.23. 5-1, 57-31.
Ronnie put Korneliussen wide on the first turn allowing Freddie and Nieminen to escape, but Ronnie caught and rounded the Finn on lap two.
Heat 15: Adams, Richardson, Howe, Skornicki, 58.09. 1-5, 58-36.
Swindon led this one all the way for only their second heat advantage of the night – one of those being Adams’s six-pointer.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Excellent all night.
Track conditions: **** Was watered too late before start time, hence a little tricky early on.
Attendance: * A very poor showing from both sets of fans.
Wolves’ Performance: ***** Superb – Swindon would have needed to follow on to have any chance.
Entertainment value: ** Some very bland racing, with the exception of Adam’s superb passing move.
Man of the Match: Very tough to call this one, but Ronnie Correy’s markedly improved performance just edges it to him.
Referee (Phil Griffin): ***** No decisions to make.
Rider ratings:
After some thought, I have decided that all the Wolves earned four stars for their fine performance and for working perfectly as a team.
Well, that’s our first Craven Shield fixture done and dusted – let’s hope for similar performances in the rest of the competition, and also that they are viewed by larger crowds!
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
