WOLVES NEW POLISH STAR SET FOR
BRITISH SPEEDWAY DEBUT AT TELFORD
WOLVERHAMPTON speedway fans will have an early chance to see the club’s new
Polish signing Krzysztof Pecyna in action at Telford in a fortnight’s time.
Pecyna, 26, has been snapped up by co-promoters Ian Thomas and Graham Drury
to make his
British debut in the 20th indoor ice international at Telford on Sunday
February 13.
‘We will organise an autograph signing and photo opportunity for the Wolves
fans at Telford,’ said
Drury. ‘It will be a bonus for them because they were already coming to the
event to support
another Wolverhampton rider, David Howe.’
The surprise signing of Pecyna, from newly-promoted Gdansk, completes
Wolverhampton’s line-up
for the 2005 season. And the rider could also be joining Torun on loan from
Gdansk in the Polish
League this year.
Wolves promoter Chris Van Straaten says: ‘Krzysztof is an established
performer in the Polish
First Division. He has had many opportunities to come over to the UK in the
past but has never had
the right set-up, something which has been put right now he has a new sponsor
in Poland.
‘His enthusiasm is second to none and he comes to us from the same contacts
who introduced us to
Adam Skornicki. When Krzysztof came over to meet me to discuss his move to
Wolves, he brought
some DVD recordings of him in racing action. He sees this move as a golden
opportunity.
‘I appreciate it is fairly late in his career for him to be coming to ride in
the British League for the
first time but he feels it is the right time and the right circumstances. I
want to thank both Gdansk
and Torun for their assistance in bringing him to Wolverhampton.’
Pecyna made his Polish Extra League debut in 1996, for his home-town club
Pila against Tarnow.
Two years later he was runner-up in the Polish Under 21 Championship.
He has spent his entire speedway career in the Polish League and has ridden
for three clubs,
including three spells with Gdansk (1999-2000, 2002 and 2004). He has also
ridden for Pila
(1996-98, 2003) and for Leszno (2001).
Pecyna goes straight into the Rest of the World squad at Telford as reserve
and will also compete in
the Speedway Star Best Pairs Knock-out and the 17th British Open Championship.
