Monday 4 September 2006, Wolves 41 Swindon 49, Elite League (B)
Swindon win the bonus point 96-84
Parry’s International Wolves: 41
1. Peter Karlsson 2, 3, 3, 1', 1' = 10+2
2. Christian Hefenbrock 0, 0, 0 = 0
3. Ronnie Correy 1, 0, 1', 2 = 4+1
4. Billy Hamill 3, 2, 2, F = 7
5. Freddie Lindgren 3, 3, 3, 2, 2 = 13
6. William Lawson 2, 1, 0, 0, 2 = 5
7. Magnus Karlsson 0, 1, 1, 0 = 2
Swindon Robins:49
1. Leigh Adams 3, 3, Fx, 3, 3 = 12
2. Adrian Miedzinski R/R
3. Edward Kennett (G) 1, 0, 1', 2, 1 = 5+1
4. Lee Richardson 2, 2, 3, 1', 3, 0 = 11+1
5. Seb Ulamek 2, 1', 0, 0 = 3+1
6. Mads Korneliussen 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 1 = 13
7. Tomasz Chrzanowski 1, 0, 2', 2 = 5+1
This was a match Wolves had to win by more than four points to claim the bonus point in their chase for 4th place and the playoffs. Wolves rode under protest – though this wasn’t announced to the crowd – as Swindon tracked guest Edward Kennett and Rider Replacement for the injured / ill / couldn’t be bothered (delete as appropriate) Adrian Miedzinski and Renat Gufarov. Sky TV was in town along with the frustrating breaks in the action for “live” fans.
Heat 01: Adams, P Karlsson, Kennett, Hefenbrock 2-4
PK pushes Adams hard for 4 laps but can’t quite find a way past. 55.28 – Adams is flying.
Heat 02: Korneliussen, Lawson, Chrzanowski, M Karlsson 2-4 4-8
Magnus emerges from a tight first bend in front but is robbed of a race win by an engine problem on the 3rd lap. It’s tight between the other three.
Heat 03: Hamill, Richardson, Correy, Kennett 4-2 8-10
Billy from the gate with ease, Richardson rounds Ronnie for 2nd place.
Heat 04: Lindgren, Ulamek, Lawson, Chrzanowski 4-2 12-12
Excellent ride from Freddie who chases Ulamek for three laps before cutting inside off the 2nd bend. Lawson beats the ex GP rider (can’t really call him a star) for the odd point.
Heat 05: Adams, Hamill, Korneliussen, Correy 2-4 14-16
Adams easily in another fast time (55.38). Poor ride from Ronnie.
Heat 06: P Karlsson, Korneliussen, Ulamek, Hefenbrock 3-3 17-19
Not a great start from PK but he finds enough drive out wide on the 1st bend to pull away.
Heat 07: Lindgren, Richardson, Kennett, Lawson 3-3 20-22
Freddie looks fast tonight, good effort from William for no reward.
Heat 08: Richardson, Chrzanowski, M Karlsson, Hefenbrock 1-5 21-27
Very poor effort from the Wolves pair. Easy 5-1 to Swindon.
Heat 09: Korneliussen, Hamill, Correy, Ulamek 3-3 24-30
It really looks dire now. Hamill can’t catch the flying Korneliussen who rides the outside line to great effect. Good ride from Ronnie to beat Ulamek.
Heat 10: P Karlsson, Kennett, Richardson, Lawson 3-3 27-33
William comes in for an out of touch Christian. Both Robins riders hit trouble on the back straight and Will is through, however he rides the inside line on a night when the drive is all on the outside…
Heat 11: Re-run Lindgren, Chrzanowski, M Karlsson, Adams (Fx) 4-2 31-35
Controversial decision from referee Ronnie Allan. Freddie edges in front of Leigh Adams as they head for the dirt line. Adams slides off right out by the fence and the referee excludes him almost immediately. He clearly hasn’t had time to watch the replay. In the rerun, Fred does his bit by blocking Chrzanowski’s run on the inside line but a very hesitant Magnus fails to take advantage. Very poor effort from Magnus.
Heat 12: Korneliussen, Correy, Kennett, M Karlsson 2-4 33-39
Ronnie goes for the outside line on the 1st bend, hampering Magnus who doesn’t want to know after that. Mads is the real match winner for Swindon and it’s all over now.
Heat 13: Adams, Lindgren, P Karlsson, Ulamek 3-3 36-42
Another easy win for Adams. No challenge from PK in 3rd.
Heat 14: Richardson, Lawson, Korneliussen, Hamill fell 2-4 38-46
Sums up our night… Hamill tries everything to pass Richardson getting scarily close to his back wheel at times. There is only one line – outside – which Richardson rides and Hamill overdoes it and slides off on the last lap. William switches lines to the outside to keep out Mads at the back.
Heat 15: Adams, Lindgren, P Karlsson, Richardson 3-3 41-49
5-1 to Swindon from the gate. Freddie challenges hard on the 3rd lap and Richardson drops to last with apparent bike problems.
Verdict: A very performance from the Wolves who threw away three vital league points at a vital stage of the season. Credit to Swindon who were worthy winners but are they really as good as we’ve made them look – twice – at Monmore this season?
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Dry and surprisingly warm.
Track: Smooth and much slicker than in recent weeks. Outside line only.
Attendance: Always lower when Sky are in town.
Wolves Performance: Inept.
Entertainment: Poor by recent standards.
Referee: I haven’t seen the replay of heat 11 (and neither did he!) so he may have been right.
Man of the Match: Fredrik Lindgren is the only serious contender.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter: 5 Well short of his brilliant best which we have seen so often this year.
Christian: 3 What happened? I expected him to be full of confidence after a superb 3rd place in the World Under 21 Final on Saturday, but strangely Chris was off the pace from the beginning.
Ronnie: 5 No lack of effort and he had his moments but a poor points return.
Billy: 5 Likewise – great effort for little reward.
Fredrik: 8 Impressive, especially considering his Under 21 Final disappointment.
William: 7 Beat Chrzanowski twice and Korneliussen in heat 14. That’s beyond what we can reasonably expect from him (hence the rating). Rode the wrong line in heat 10 but at least he learnt from it.
Magnus: 3 Robbed of a win through bike problems which seemed to drain him of all confidence. Very frustrating.
We still have a chance of 4th place – though we’ll probably need 2 or 3 away wins to do it, but do we really deserve a playoff place after this performance? I think not. Roll on the Craven Shield, I’m sure Peter Adams will have another plan.
Mark Rowe.
