Belle Vue win 100-87 on aggregate.
Before the start of this match, several fans were predicting a heavy home defeat or a last heat decider. Thankfully Wolves proved them wrong, with a welcome return to form from Ronnie and Magnus proving the difference, although Christian struggled badly once again. PK passed a late fitness test to ride, but looked very out of sorts in his last two rides and was not selected for heat 15.
Despite the usual high noise levels from the visiting Belle Vue crowd, they would only walk away with the bonus point.
Belle Vue won the toss and took the inside gates.
Heat 1: P Karlsson, Correy, Stead, Wright, 55.07. 5-1, 5-1.
PK’s fitness may have been a worry before the start after his crash in Sweden, but he showed no sign of it here as he led all the way, missing the track record by an agonising two hundredths of a second! Even more amazingly, Ronnie laid aside the curse that has seen him finish pointless in his first ride at almost every meeting this year, and fllowed Pk all the way! What a start!
Heat 2 (rerun): Lawson, M Karlsson, Morris, Madsen (f.exc), 56.71. 5-1, 10-2.
Madsen clipped the fence exiting turn two and was flung to the ground along with his bike in a nasty looking crash. After a while he got to his feet but looked very shaken, although it was announced he would continue in the meeting. In the rerun it was Wolves from the gate once again, with Will looking the complete package at the front. Morris, on the other hand, looked a complete package way back in third (according to one Wolves fan anyway!). Two 5-1s in the first two heats – how often does this happen at Monmore?
Heat 3: Hamill, Wright, Bjerre, Hefenbrock, 56.52. 3-3, 13-5.
Billy sent Bjerre wide and went off into the lead, while the team-riding Belle Vue pair just kept the slow-starting Christian out of the points.
Heat 4: Crump, Lindgren, M Karlsson, Morris, 56.19. 3-3,16-8.
A predictable result, and the race was a procession save for Magnus taking Morris for third on the first lap having missed the start.
Heat 5: Bjerre, Hamill, Stead, Hefenbrock, 56.89. 2-4, 18-12.
Billy gated but went wide leaving Bjerre in the lead ahead of Christian. Rather than protect the 3-3, Billy passed Christian and chose to attack Bjerre’s considerable lead, leaving Christian to fall prey to Stead at the end of lap three.
Heat 6: Crump, P Karlsson, Correy, Morris, 55.42. 3-3, 21-15.
Crump streaked clear at the front once again, with Morris looking slow at the back. PK and Ronnie packed those all-important minor places.
Heat 7: Lindgren, Bjerre, Lawson, Wright, 56.98. 4-2, 25-17.
Wright looked to have moved of early but was last on reaching the first turn and the race continued. Meanwhile Freddie produced a good inside move on Bjerre to take the lead at the end of lap one, and went on to win.
Heat 8: Stead, M Karlsson, Correy, Madsen, 56.60. 3-3, 28-20.
Again the Wolves packed the minor places behind Stead, who finally got his set-up right for the track. Madsen reappeared for the first time since his crash, but looked far from fit and would not ride again in this meeting.
Heat 9: Crump, Hamill, Hefenbrock, Morris, 56.47. 3-3, 31-23.
Three out of three for the new World Champion, after Billy had again run wide on the first turn.
Heat 10: Bjerre, Correy, P Karlsson, Wright, 57.38. 3-3, 34-26.
Ronnie and PK appeared to make contact on the first turn allowing Bjerre to make his break, with PK dropping away alarmingly into fourth. He took until the last lap to retake Wright, and something was clearly amiss.
Heat 11: Stead, Lindgren, Crump (tactical sub, double), Lawson, 56.33. 2-5, 36-31.
Crump appeared wearing the black and white helmet and from the handicap, but it did not work as well as he hoped. Stead led all the way and tried to hold up the Wolves, but although Crump passed Will on lap two, he couldn’t catch Freddie!
Heat 12 (rerun): M Karlsson, Bjerre, Morris, Hefenbrock (f.exc), 57.68. 3-3, 39-34.
A little drizzle had begun to fall over the stadium by this stage, and its effect on the track may well have caused Christian’s spin on the first turn, for which he was excluded after staying down. Magnus led all the way in the rerun to keep the heat score level and keep the Aces at bay.
Heat 13: Lindgren, Stead, P Karlsson, Crump (f), 56.13. 4-2, 43-36.
When was the last time we saw Jason Crump take a tumble? The Wolves outgated him in this one, only for Stead to pass PK on the first lap swiftly followed by the Aussie. Stead let the World Champion into second to attack the flying Freddie, but just when a last bend lunge looked a certainty, he slipped and fell against the fence to the disappointment of the many Belle Vue fans present. Freddie was jubilant and celebrated with a wheelie, while PK looked out of sorts once again in third.
Heat 14 (rerun): Hamill, Lawson, Morris, Wright (f.exc), 60.74. 5-1, 48-37.
The first attempt was called back after Morris moved off early, and the threatening rain had finally arrived for the rerun. After a short delay to allow it to ease off, the restart took place on a very tricky track, with Will leading until Wright slipped wide and fell on turn four against the air fence. He was excluded – although he cruised up to the tapes for the rerun as if nothing had happened – and the race restarted again, with the Wolves stroking it home after Morris went straight on at turn three and dropped back.
Heat 15: Lindgren, Bjerre, Hamill, Stead, 58.60. 4-2, 52-39.
Any niggling suspicions about PK’s fitness were confirmed when he was not selected for heat 15, while Crump apparently had to leave early to catch a plane so also did not appear. Wolves gated yet again and Freddie led all the way to complete an excellent night, while Bjerre completed a good night’s work by holding off Billy all the way.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Although the stadium was bathed in a glorious pink sunset before tapes-up, the threat of rain was always apparent and it arrived towards the end of the match.
Track: A good surface on the night produced some very fast racing, but the rain spoiled it towards the end.
Attendance: A very large crowd, as is always the case when Belle Vue visit.
Wolves Performance: Better than in recent weeks, with the lower order finding their early season form once again.
Entertainment: Several races were processions, but the atmosphere of a Wolves v Aces clash always makes for good entertainment on its own.
Referee (Graham Reeve): Called everything correctly in my eyes.
Man of the Match: Despite pressure form both reserves, Freddie Lindgren was the best all-rounder on the night, so he gets the award.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 6 Clearly not fully fit, but tried his hardest.
Ronnie Correy: 7 Much better than in recent weeks.
Christian Hefenbrock: 3 Christian’s form has dipped alarmingly in recent weeks.
Billy Hamill: 7 Another decent night continues Billy’s good late-season form.
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Very fast all night, especially from the gate.
William Lawson: 7 Looked very rapid yet again around Monmore.
Magnus Karlsson: 8 Answered his critics in the best possible way.
The first of three matches in three days was a successful one, but it is still an uphill task for Wolves to make the playoffs. Let’s hope for plenty of luck and, above all, fast gating at Poole and Coventry later this week.
